Article source: Javier Mosquera González

Gymnasium = Gymnasion

In ancient Greece, the Gymnasium was used to practice exercise, as a public bath, as a center for studies and as a common place for philosophers. The main idea of this project is to create a meeting place for the  citizens. The building is configures into several exterior and interior areas where coexistence happens in a natural way. The project is divided into three parts, the first one, exterior, with a horizontal area ready to hold open air events. The second one defined as daily sports facilities, and the third one understood as the multipurpose gymnasium and spectators area, conceived as an area around the courts and directly linked to the park on the east side of the plot. The last part is the area with the common facilities such as dressing rooms, cafeteria and offices, all of them organized around those three main areas, ensuring the proper functioning of the building.

Old becomes new
The task comprised restructuring and extending the old school for forest wardens from the 1970s in order to create a contemporary educational institution. the old residential wing was demolished because of the building’s structure and its low ceiling height. the concrete rubble was used as subgrade for the new building. The classroom wing and the gym hall could be preserved and were expanded by another set of classrooms and a large gym hall. the four building parts are grouped equitably around the new one-storey centre of the school.

Saturday, May 10th, 2014

Article source: MIDE architetti + Paolo Didonè

Following the 2012 earthquake that struck Emilia Romagna a competition was announce to rebuild a destroyed school gymnasium in Massa Finalese.

The site, which is located in the north-east side of a school park, is the border between the urban area and the country side, suggesting the new building to be the new “connecting tool” between these two realities.

The main focus is to create a structure able to soften the urban/country “boundary” and to characterize the whole of the school park as well:
