Wafra Beacon in Kuwait by STUDIOTOGGLE ARCHITECTS

Friday, September 6th, 2019

Article source: STUDIOTOGGLE ARCHITECTS

Wafra Beacon is a competition-winning proposal for a food and beverage mall development for the Sabah Al Ahmed Sea City area in Kuwait. The proposal transcends the barriers of traditional F&B developments in the region.

The project scope includes two rectangular plots facing a public square anchored by a mosque. Each plot contains a sectional podium housing independent multi-level restaurants and a multi-use tower. The Beacon is designed to be the destination of choice for the trendiest concepts in the Kuwait culinary scene while doubling up as the hub for a healthy and active beach lifestyle. Departing from the notion of a traditional F & B Mall, the design seeks to function as an Oasis for the young, active and creative demographic inhabiting the surrounding areas and visiting for the weekends.

The Place in Taipei, Taiwan by Mecanoo

Monday, August 12th, 2019

Article source: Mecanoo

The Place, like its name, brands itself as a hotel that creates a unique visitor experienced that embodies the specific identity of each place. This specificity of place is central to Mecanoo’s “People, Place, Purpose” design philosophy, which emphasizes users, a holistic understanding of the social, historical and physical context, and a response to current and future building functions. For each assignment, our goal is to seek out the secret of the location to create a unique design that strengthens the distinct identity of the context.

In keeping with this design philosophy, Mecanoo’s interiors for The Place hotels in other cities all embody a unique sense of place: The Place in Tainan reinterprets the historic city’s rich streetscape; in Yilan, the hotel is located in the National Center for Traditional Arts and draws its inspiration from local craftsmanship. By contrasting old and new, mixing of west and east, the hotel becomes a contemporary interpretation of a traditional art form.

A river cruiser designed for the Far East by Salt & Water

Wednesday, July 31st, 2019

Article source: Salt & Water

This new cruiser for European tourists is designed to show the beauty of the Mekong River and the country through which it flows. For this reason, we designed the interior of this 56m long and four-deck ship in a modern style, based on the heritage of the Far East architecture.

The selected textures, materials and geometry are characteristic for this area. The entire interior is designed as a frame for nature through which it is cruising – to complement it, instead of drawing attention from the natural beauty of the landscape.

Marmalade Lane cohousing in Cambridge, England by Mole Architects

Wednesday, July 24th, 2019

Article source: Mole Architects

Marmalade Lane, Cambridge’s first cohousing development, is now complete and welcoming K1 Cohousing members. This marks the culmination of eighteen years of work by the group, and comes at a moment when custom-build and community-led housing are being recognised by the government as viable and attractive models for future housing.

The development comprises 42 homes – a mix of two- to five-bedroom terraced houses and one- and two-bedroom apartments. In common with other cohousing communities now established in the UK, Marmalade Lane’s shared spaces and communal facilities, designed to foster community spirit and sustainable living, are integral to the development. These include extensive shared gardens as the focal space of the community, with areas for growing food, play, socialising and quiet contemplation, and a flexible ‘common house’ with a play room, guest bedrooms, laundry facilities, meeting rooms, and a large hall and kitchen for shared meals and parties. A separate workshop and gym are located elsewhere on site. All residents are members of K1 Cohousing, have a stake in the common parts and contribute to the management of the community. Fulfilling the group’s aspiration for mixed, intergenerational living, the multi-national group includes families with young children, retired and young professional couples and single-person households of different ages.

On the periphery of a nondescript residential area in Groningen, Gianni Cito designed a large building for two schools, two childcare centres and a playground. From the outset, the end users played an important role in this project, engaging in regular dialogue with the architect during workshops. One of the significant outcomes was the proposal to share out-of-school care facilities, play rooms, gym, kitchen, staff room, science classroom and the playground.

Game Streetmekka Aalborg in Denmark by JAJA Architects

Friday, May 10th, 2019

Article source: JAJA Architects

The former laboratory building situated at Eternitten is a fantastic setting for GAME Streetmekka Aalborg. The production building from 1963 testifies to the industrial history of the neighborhood with its raw and distinctive character, almost demanding to be conquered by urban street culture. Our main concept is to merge the informal nature of street activities into the existing laboratory building frames, creating spatial 'experiments' that inspire new connections between the many activities. Rather than separating them, an urban melting pot is created that encourages spontaneous activity and surprising events.
