The New South Student Center at Georgetown University is a renovation and addition that transforms an existing mid century residence hall into a vibrant new university living room for undergraduate life. Inspired by the unique ‘Hoya Saxa’ (stones) identity of the Georgetown student body, the center creates an experience of study and casual living spaces carved out of interior and exterior stone edifices. The ‘Saxa’ living wall is a stone clad green wall that provides a natural bio-friendly character to the Great Room that overlooks the Potomac and is one of many design features that assist this project in achieving a LEED Gold certification. Inside the ‘Saxa’ living wall are 12 individual wood clad group study rooms with enhanced video display systems and writable glass partition for students to work on projects together or separately. The Riverside Terrace is an outdoor landscaped area that extends the living space of the Great Room outdoors and overlooks the Potomac.
The aim of the Museum and Cultural center is to invent a cultural center of new type without duplicating existing models, to create a hybrid space that takes into account the realities of the cultural Moroccan context, to provide different content and reach a diverse audience. The shape of the traditional nomadic tent provides the starting point for the architectural concept.
The design concept for renovation of the entrance hall of Poljane Grammar School (established in 1889) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was to highlight the existing qualities of the historical shell – preserved wall and ceiling stucco and elaborate columns, placed in a strict symmetrical axis. A small square in front of the building, the entrance hall and the central staircase are all connected by this important path that has been poorly manipulated by various spatial reconstructions in the past.
The Campus of the technical university is located on the premises of a former railway engine plant. In line with a large building project and competition in 2006, SEHW Architecture has carried out the campus extension.
The competition comprised the urban planning and implementation of a functional building, a lecture hall centre and student hostel for 200 students.
Cinema Ideal was the first cinema in Portugal. Located in the heart of Lisbon, between Loreto and Horta Seca streets, it occupies the ground floor of two buildings built in two different epochs – 19th and 20th centuries. Since its inauguration in 1904, the cinema was transformed by multiple interventions, becoming a degraded and architecturally disqualified place, showing exclusively pornographic films during the last three decades.
For the first time in decades, Sault College has a new academic building. Essar Hall forms a gateway that announces the new energized spirit for learning at Sault College. Here, much needed new learning spaces support future-forward teaching pedagogies. Organizing the classrooms and labs spaces around common areas that promote casual learning and interdisciplinary idea exchanges emphasizes the connectivity, community, and engagement that generates a clear sense of identity and belonging. Situated prominently at the building entrance is a flexible exhibition hall that links classrooms with aviation and natural resource laboratories, a 100 seat lecture hall and administration support spaces. An additional 8,000 square feet of interactive learning commons is strategically distributed throughout the building providing essential flexible and dynamic learning spaces for students.
We are proud to announce our winning design for a new City Hall for the municipal of Furesø in Denmark. The design proposes a city hall solution where sustainability and democratic design has been the driving force and ambition. “Our hope is that Furesø City Hall will be a model for the future of democratic institutions and provide a framework for collaborations and new alliances between government, citizens and business. Therefore, the team has designed a building that enters into a dialogue with its surroundings and its users. The town of Chasseneuil-du-Poitou wished to build a new hall for festivities and cultural events in a redevelopment area centred around the railway station. Designs for the new Hall had to respect the Technological Risks Prevention Plan implemented in the area. The building designed by King Kong was therefore positioned at a tangent to the outer perimeter demarcating this zone, oriented so as to limit noise pollution for those living in housing to the south of the plot.
The new scout hut and village hall with the related outdoor play area is located behind the park, Søndermarken in copenhagen. The plot lies stretched out between the road and Søndermarken. It is at the narrowest point not more than 10 meters, but in return it is 80 meters long in east west direction. The plot has a level jumps in the same direction about three meters. The prospect of the large trees in Søndermarken is to make the plot quite unique.
The city of Jacou’s wedding hall and municipal room project needed to be rethought at the crossroads of several axes and scales. The aim was to change the use of an existing building located in the town center. In order to fully integrate these new functions and to establish a strong link between the city hall and the marriage hall, a consistency of materiality has been set up in this project. The interventions on the ground and the facades have been proportionate to the respect of an harmonious work, focussing on the balance between heritage and contemporary creation. Thus, this new program is associated with a generous public space accessible to everyone.
