The Séqué in Bayonne, France by Gardera Patrice

Thursday, April 20th, 2017

Article source: Gardera Patrice

A small courtyard, a back entrance on the kitchen side, a hut, a dead tree, garden boots, smells, be in touch with nature, birdsong, animals, a vegetable garden, a shed for tools, a pergola, ivy along the walls, piles of wood, a tree under which to shelter, a forest, an under-growth, a river, an attic, a chicken coop, a bench, a pond, a well, a fountain, a path…

Living outside, space, air, light. How to live the countryside? How do you live in a forest? What are the ambiances? What are the specific characteristics of a habitat in the countryside?

2222 Jackson in New York by ODA New York

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Article source: ODA New York

Just steps from MoMA PS1 in white hot Long Island City Queens, ODA New York is upending the real estate market with an 11-story, 175-unit rental project to rival the best of luxury condo living.

Distinguished by its sculptural, almost pixelated, poured concrete exterior, 2222 Jackson is both an easy material compliment to neighboring PS1, and an exemplar of its designer’s larger mission: Adept at working within—rather than against—zoning constraints, ODA has once again focused on innovating architectural morphology in the interest of improving not only its residents’ everyday experience, but their general quality of life.

Wow! Sta. in Chuo-ku Niigata, Japan by Takeru Shoji Architects Co., Ltd.

Thursday, April 13th, 2017

Article source: Takeru Shoji Architects Co., Ltd.

Wow! Sta. is situated in Horinouchi, in the Central Ward of Niigata City – an area where the city center gradually begins to give way to the suburbs. The scenery lining the nearby main road is dominated by large commercial and retail buildings and their accompanying signage.

The businesses, houses and multilevel apartments that sprawl out from Niigata Station constitute this typical inner-city area.

Located just one street back from the main road with its dazzling lights and the din of the traffic, we find an area that is surprisingly calm, unlit by even street lights.

Student Housing Campus Eindhoven University of Technology in Netherlands by Office Winhov + office haratori in collaboration with BDG Architecten Almere

Wednesday, April 5th, 2017

Article source: Office Winhov

Work began on building the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in 1957 based on the urban development plan of S.J. van Embden. His design aimed at creating an idealised factory environment for technical research and study consisting of tall, modern buildings on stilts that were connected with one another and with the laboratories and workshops located in between them by means of aerial walkways. The plan followed the modern ideal of self-contained buildings in a continuous landscape. The rational structure in which the buildings followed a fixed grid pattern was expressed in the curtain walls of the first generation of buildings on the campus. A master plan for the reorganisation and expansion of the campus has been drawn up following the original design. It envisages the introduction of accommodation for students and researchers on the north side of the campus on the edge of the green brook valley of the Dommel.

St Joseph in Melbourne, Australia by KUD – Kavellaris Urban Design

Saturday, April 1st, 2017

Article source: KUD – Kavellaris Urban Design

The St. Joseph project is a luxury residential development situated in Abbottsford, Victoria. Due to its historical significance the site has become part of the cultural landscape within the area, demanding a highly responsive and respectful design outcome. Our primary objective was to incorporate the critical components of school’s culture and history as a celebration and balance of the past and the future – creating ‘future heritage’ for the next generation. We were interested in exploring ways to interpret and represent the critical ‘story’ that created the culture and history of St Joseph’s Technical School. The design intent was to recreate multiple simultaneous layers of history within the articulated screens that wrap around the street frontage facades. The faceted panels create a “Lenticular Image”; an optical phenomenon whereby singular segments of an image converge at specific points of view to recreate the completed image.

Artrovert: Conversations in Grey in Greater Noida, India by Anagram Architects

Friday, March 31st, 2017

Article source: Anagram Architects

Brief

Artrovert is our project to design a studio in a peri-urban artists’ colony, Kaladham, in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The 280 sqm. studio is built on a 300 sqm trapezoidal plot which is one of 216 arranged in an octagonal grid. Our client-collaborator is a multi-media artist whose politically charged works interrogate binaries, challenge representation and explore the anti-aesthetic.Equally unconventionally, her vision for her studio was not the typical introverted artist’s “cave” but rather an extroverted residency where the creation of art and the living of the artist are shared with her precinct. Acutely aware of Kaladham’s location at the urban edge, she hopes such an outward expression and blurring of territory would lay seeds of well-knit social networks for a growing community.
