The town of Dammarie-les-Lys (Seine-et-Marne) is organised around three main interlinking spaces: the Lys plain, the historical town centre and the park surrounding the Abbey.
The Albert Schweitzer community centre is located in the heart of the Lys plain, in a neighbourhood made up of several thousand housing units built in the 1970s and known, at the time, as an «urban centre».
You can wander through the Dutch polder landscape while at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The landscape was the main source of inspiration behind the new Holland Boulevard, an international departures hall designed by NEXT architects and that now comprises various typical Dutch-inspired sitting rooms. These rooms are separated by low walls; together, they form the horizon of this vast space of 5,000 m2. Each room has its own atmosphere and ambiance and so the Holland Boulevard takes visitors on a real voyage of discovery.
Mission Branch Library Renovation, Santa Clara, California
Noll & Tam Architects Breathe New Life into a Treasured Community Asset
Surrounded by City Park and located close to downtown Santa Clara and a number of schools, the Mission Branch Library has been an essential resource to the community since it opened in 1954. Built as the first stand-alone library in the city, the building had received only minor updates since first opening, and was in desperate need of a refresh to enhance comfort, create a more welcoming atmosphere, and bring it into the 21st century.
The Maison de la littérature (House of Literature) is located in the historic neighbourhood of Old Québec, a site part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In this particularly dense urban setting, Chevalier Morales designed a contemporary annex, a simple and refined volume, to the Wesley Temple, a neo-Gothic heritage church. Since its opening, the Maison de la littérature has rapidly become a vibrant home to Québec literature and a popular touristic destination in Old Québec.
Stemming from an architecture competition, the winning project by Chevalier Morales proposed an unforeseen solution, a response exceeding the initial commission’s expectations. The architects chose to move part of the program into a new annex outside the church space to provide a more transparent and universal entrance.
Noll & Tam Architects is working with the Solano Community College District on the design of their new Library/Learning Resource Center. The new 59,252-square-foot, two-story Library/Learning Resource Center building is envisioned as the symbolic and physical heart of the Fairfield Campus. It will strengthen an existing campus community as it attracts and inspires students by providing needed services such as tutorial, research and group study rooms. The building represents a shift occurring on many campuses where active and collaborative learning has become a priority.
The new West End branch of the DC Public Library (Library) is a 20,100 SF, LEED Gold-designed community-gathering space. This project is the first of its kind for the Library: a joint public-private venture for developing the library space within a tenant space shell rather than a stand-alone building. Creating an environment that was seamlessly integrated and harmonized with the base building design, while celebrating the Library's forward-thinking approach to its facilities’ design and multitude of programmatic offerings and services for the community, was the main focus of the joint effort between the Library, EastBanc, Inc., and the design team.
KODE 1 Museum of Decorative Art—part of KODE Museums, one of Norway’s largest art institutions—is a rehabilitation project by 3RW arkitekter of all the spaces in the centenary building receiving the public, through the insertion of a display wall for the first time showcasing the museum’s archive and creating a new dialectic between the thick stone walls of the old institution, the museum workspaces and the public. At a time when the cultural and artistic sectors of Bergen are thriving, KODE 1 is the latest addition to the city’s cultural revival.
New modular furniture was created to cater for the various spaces and programmes, inspired by ancient Nordic museum displays with slender steel units and flexible arrangements. A white steel mesh ceiling and custom-made carpets and curtains complete a list of key interior elements that were added to the museum to give it a new civic presence in the city.
The Royal Library is one of the most significant architectural landmarks on the Copenhagen waterfront. Clad in black granite, the extension to the Royal Library is known as the ‘Black Diamond’ – with its clean-cut lines and glittering polished surfaces, the library is one of Copenhagen’s architectural gems.
Situated in the historic heart of Copenhagen, the extension marks a radical shift from traditional library structure and accommodates a range of cultural facilities. Open and essentially democratic, the building includes a café, bookshop, exhibition room, restaurant, scientific and literary institutions, as well as a roof terrace and a 600-seat hall for concerts, theatrical performances and conferences. The extension has doubled the library’s overall size – the open shelves can accommodate more than 200,000 books compared to the previous capacity of 45,000. There are six reading rooms with a total of 486 seats.
The opening of Apple Carnegie Library in the heart of Washington DC marks the revitalisation of an important monument in the city’s history. As the city’s first public library, and its first desegregated public building, the Carnegie Library of Washington DC played a central role in community life for over 70 years since its opening in 1903. After a period of neglect, Apple Carnegie Library continues the traditions of the building by creating a new platform for learning, performance and art for a new generation.
The brief asked for desk area for 12-14 people, a conference room, a library, a kitchenette and break out area, while keeping the space open and without visual clutter when needed in a 1000 sf space.
In order to fit the requirements of the client, central area of the space is dedicated for a continuous work desk while conference room, library, kitchenette and break out area was located on the two ends.
