2222 Jackson in New York by ODA New York

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Article source: ODA New York

Just steps from MoMA PS1 in white hot Long Island City Queens, ODA New York is upending the real estate market with an 11-story, 175-unit rental project to rival the best of luxury condo living.

Distinguished by its sculptural, almost pixelated, poured concrete exterior, 2222 Jackson is both an easy material compliment to neighboring PS1, and an exemplar of its designer’s larger mission: Adept at working within—rather than against—zoning constraints, ODA has once again focused on innovating architectural morphology in the interest of improving not only its residents’ everyday experience, but their general quality of life.

Östermalm’s temporary market hall in Sweden by Metsä Wood

Saturday, March 25th, 2017

Article source: Metsä Wood

The distinctive new building in Stockholm’s Östermalm is a temporary market hall that was built as a temporary space while the old market hall is being renovated. What nobody expected was the tremendous popularity of this “wooden box”, which ended up winning Sweden’s most prestigious design award.

The old market hall, built in 1886, in Stockholm’s Östermalm district is known for the prestige its history carries among its committed customers. In 2012, this well-established rendezvous point in Stockholm’s finest district faced a critical need for a complete renovation, and the city invited bids for the refurbishment project. The entrepreneurs of the market hall needed to relocate for a couple of years.

Mercado do Gado in Ponte de Lima, Portugal by Carvalho Araújo, Arquitectura e Design

Saturday, March 25th, 2017

Article source: Carvalho Araújo, Arquitectura e Design

The complex design has an unlikely morphology for a cattle market, away from the massive image of the prefabricated pavilions. Located near the town, it releases the closure of the urban fabric so another more appropriate equipment can do it. Its function is another: the transition between the immediate rurality of the suburbs and the historic center of Ponte de Lima. The new complex cohabits with palaces, gardens and chapels, and its structure composes an orthogonal grid that relates to the existing routes and reinforces the visual relationship with the river.

The Earth Market is something bigger than the cattle fair and market, than the horse fair or Expolima, it comes from a wider ambition to create a network of “structures”, sporadic and localized interventions of a smaller or larger scale, but precise and of ”exact measurements”.

Common Ground in Seoul, South Korea by URBANTAINER

Thursday, March 9th, 2017

Article source: URBANTAINER

Common Ground is the result of an experiment of revitalising unused land in the middle of the city. By applying prefab methods, e.g. producing modules in a factory, transporting them to the construction site and assembling them on-site, it was possible to reduce the construction time of the 5300 m2 building to five months.

In order to maximise the usage efficiency of the elongated rectangular shaped land, the architectural form is based on a center square connecting two buildings.

Quai de Rome in Liège, Belgium by MDW ARCHITECTURE & H+G ARCHITECTS

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

Article source: MDW ARCHITECTURE

Programmes of this type are notorious for producing mundane buildings – devoid of interest at best, and often outright urbicide. Our vision goes beyond the mere cosmetic upgrade of the decorated shed, asking: How can the designers of a supermarket quietly succeed in weaving part of the urban fabric?

New market in Celje, Slovenia by Arhitektura Krušec

Friday, January 20th, 2017

Article source: Arhitektura Krušec

The town market is situated in the heart of the city. Ever since it was formed, in the middle of the previous century, the market has represented the centre of urban activity in the city.

In contrast to the old market, the new development is designed as an extrovert urban area, a kind of covered city square which is inextricably linked to the surrounding urban space.
