Ondrej Chybik and Michal Kristof, the ex-PPAG and ex-BIG architects living and working in Slovakia and Czech Republic, has shared with us the winning project recently awarded by the “Cena Juhomoravskeho kraja 2010”. The alternative masterplan of “Juzne Centrum” in Brno, big brownfield in the 2nd biggest city of Czech Republic, is driven by local activists groups, academic institution of Faculty of Architecture at University of Technology in Brno. The project incorporates the principles of ecology and economy towards common good and creates a new ecolomic urban design.
With primary focus for new construction in Amsterdam South, 2700 new houses will be developed in the Havenstraat and Zuidas zones. The Havenstraat masterplan is currently the biggest project in this area, with construction due to start in 2014. The plans are yet to be finalised, as the city must reclaim the land from companies which occupy the existing temporary buildings. Allard Architecture was triggered by these plans to develop a dwelling scheme that adapts to the specific qualities of the Havenstraat, near the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam.

Bergamo, Italy—Asymptote Architecture’s design for the Azzano-San Paolo Master Plan, a 100,000-square-meter commercial development, was recently unveiled at the MAPIC international retail real estate conference in Cannes, France. The site for the new master plan is an area south of Orio al Serio International Airport near the historic city center of Bergamo in Northern Italy. The master plan, as conceived by Asymptote, is a meandering and intriguingly articulated collection of surfaces that seem to have evolved naturally from the adjacent farmlands and calls for powerful, yet subtle, new architectural works placed on an urban plinth. Overall, the Azzano-San Paolo Master Plan is a signal for the possibility of such developments to be aesthetically compelling and architecturally dynamic.
This community was developed with the idea of life as a focus from the inception of the design process. Great emphasis was set on carefully balancing and integrating residential, cultural, commercial, recreational, naturalistic and institutional elements of this masterplan. A holistic approach to both micro and macro organization were seen as being crucial to this ultra livable city.
The future well being of cities around the globe depends on mankind’s ability to develop and integrate sustainable technology.
Masdar City is the city of the future; positioned at the forefront of integrating sustainable technology into modern architectural design. Rome, Athens, Florence; most great historical cities have had the plaza, forum, or square at their epicentre – where the life, values, ideals, and vision of the population evolved. Equally, the centre of Masdar must be an iconic beacon that attracts global attention to sustainable technology.
