Future Towers in Pune, India by MVRDV

Wednesday, January 9th, 2019

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV has completed its first project in India, Future Towers. Located in Pune, India’s 8th largest city and one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, Future Towers provides 1,068 apartments for a diverse section of the rapidly expanding population, a true vertical village that will house around 5,000 people in one building.

Future Towers is a part of Amanora Park Town, a community created in 2007 thanks to legislation passed in 2005 by the state of Maharashtra to encourage the development of residential “townships” near its cities. In Pune, these townships help to house the young professionals attracted to the city by its auto-manufacturing and technology sectors but, as with much of the rapid development all over India, many of the new buildings on Pune’s outskirts are generic, repetitive residential towers. In just 11 years, Amanora Park Town has grown to over 25,000 residents by focusing on a diverse, high-quality mixture of towers alongside low-density villas. But the pressure to expand faster with more high-density, low-individuality housing was ever-present.

A European Tower in Aubervilliers, France by Gaëtan Le Penhuel & Associés Architectes

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Article source: Gaëtan Le Penhuel & Associés Architectes

Made to measure by Sophie Trelcat

With their overlapping of black and white, the two slender volumes of this apartment block make no secret of their presence in Aubervillier’s Fort neighbourhood. The project proudly marks the first step in the Arc Express urban regeneration operation and its linking of Paris’s “inner ring” suburbs by automated underground railway. The construction of these 57 apartments has also enabled the reorganisation of a bustling intersection, with pedestrians going to and from the Fort d’Aubervilliers metro station and heavy traffic on the RN2 highway. A generously proportioned, south-facing square provides a quality urban setting for sunny café terraces and the shops that will soon be opening at street level.

Studio Loft in İzmir, Turkey by Yerce Mimarlık + ZAAS

Sunday, December 16th, 2018

Article source: Yerce Mimarlık + ZAAS

This is the story of the conversion of a regular, standard flat into a photography studio, private house and an art gallery. The apartment is located on a quiet street parallel to a busy boulevard in Alsancak, one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Izmir. The brief was to design the ground floor and the upper floor of this apartment which was part of a five storey housing block on this calm and green street, to be used as a photographic studio. During the design process, together with the client it was agreed upon that this place could go beyond being just a photographic studio. Besides meeting the demands of the client who is a well-known photographer in İzmir, who wanted to have a place for his own where he could live and work, the idea of integrating an exhibition area to this space was quickly embraced. While enabling his studio to exhibit and share the photographic work that it produces, this space would also host other photography exhibitions and thus become an alternative art exhibition spot in the city.

Aedas-designed Hong Leong City Center in Suzhou, China, recently opened its doors. As the first commercial project developed in China by Singapore-listed City Developments Limited, this mixed-use urban development in Suzhou Industrial Park offers hotel, office, retail, and serviced apartments programmes with a 150-metre hotel and office tower, a 150-metre SOHO tower, two 100-metre residential towers and a central commercial podium HLCC Mall. While facing planning conditions that limit building heights and massing, the four towers are allocated at the four corners of the site to maximise views towards the nearby Jinji Lake. The façade of the two taller towers are also designed in a unified coordination to produce a twin-tower effect.

Premier Tower in Melbourne, Australia by Elenberg Fraser

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018

Article source: Elenberg Fraser

This might be the first time you’ve heard us say this but at our new mixed-use project at 134-160 Spencer Street there’s actually less than meets the eye. Well, kind of. It’s true that the responsive approach to precinct regeneration sets a new bar for mixed-use developments. We could even say that this building, which sits directly in front of Southern Cross station – the first thing people see when arriving – will anchor the increased westerly shift of the CBD, heralded by the regeneration of Docklands, Fishermen’s Bend and Southbank.
