The Flehite Museum, although modest in floor area, treats its visitors to magnificent historical and contemporary works of art. In Amersfoort, Flehite is a big name, but despite this fame, the museum remains true to its setting: everything it presents through its permanent displays and changing exhibitions is dedicated to the (art) history of Amersfoort. A city, which is celebrating its 750th anniversary this year! Opposite the museum building is the Mannenzaal (Men’s Ward), the only remains of a late medieval hospital in the Netherlands, where the sick and elderly were cared for. It now is a prominent part of the Flehite where changing special exhibitions can be visited.
The new Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) in West Bend, Wisconsin, designed by Jim Shields, FAIA, Project Lead Designer at HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA), achieves a subtle balance between architecture as art and architecture as a neutral setting for art. The crisp, triangular geometry of the 31,000-square-foot, two-level museum moves from a glass-enclosed entrance at the southwest corner to a wedge-resolving point at the opposite end, where a glass curtain wall reveals an interior stairwell. Clad in custom, horizontal, modular fiber-cement panels in three shades of white, the surface of the building projects a soft and gentle variegation of color.
The Wilhelminaplein in Leeuwarden, also known as het Zaailand, has undergone a radical transformation. The enormous square has been re-duced considerably by the addition of the new Fries Museum on the east side and a street front of housing and shops on the north side. The existing Zaailand shopping centre has been given a facelift. This combination of commercial and cultural functions creates a lively, urban atmosphere.
Combining the new development for the StedelijkMuseumin ’s-Hertogenbosch with the renovation and extension of Het Noordbrabants Museumhas created an continuous museum district in the historical city centre. Contemporary art is merged with regional art, culture and history round the monumental garden of the former provincial government.
Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle, situated on the border between the mediaeval city centre and the open 19th century parkland with its canals, has been extended with a spectacular volume on the roof of the former Palace of Justice.
The courthouse on Blijmarkt was designed by the architect Eduard Louis de Coninck in 1938 in the neo-classical style. De Coninck intended this style of architecture to symbolise the unity in the legislation of the new kingdom. The building has a double symmetry with a monumental entrance and a central entrance hall extending over two floors.
Alfonso Architects has been awarded the building project for the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, MAACM, to be built in St. Petersburg, FL, for collector Rudy Ciccarello and the Two Red Roses Foundation (TRRF). Alberto Alfonso, AIA, will be the lead architect on the 90,000-sq.-ft. museum, which is scheduled to open in early 2016. The four-story museum will include galleries to exhibit hundreds of objects from Ciccarello’s fine and decorative arts collection, as well as additional space for special exhibitions, special events galleries, a small auditorium, a restaurant, cafe, gift shop, and bookstore. Books and catalogues on the Arts and Crafts Movement and the TRRF collection will be archived in a reference library furnished with original Stickley furniture, Tiffany lighting, and other period objects.
A coloured concrete monolith extends the existing station to host the MUS, the town’s museum of urban and social history. The extension forms the foundation for the station, with its smooth, slightly tilted façade unfolding and running up to the surrounding retaining walls. The station has been preserved in its original form, and the new foundation creates a space for a raised terrace which can be used for openings, educational events or outdoor exhibitions.
The IJzerenleen is a well-known, broad street in the town centre, enclosed by the town hall and the River Dijle. The IJzerenleen is commonly known as the ‘Champs Elysées’ of Mechelen. It accommodates several famous commercial enterprises such as Windels, Damart, chemist shop ‘t Verguld Schaap and the famous cheese shop Schockaert and the former town hall houses a small museum.
A museum should empower the evocative capacity of the memory. In this purpose, the museum is a sum of parts where each has its own value and its own characteristics.
The museum becomes a platform to make visible what was invisible until now.

The Evans Center for African American Studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design expands the University’s art museum by resurrecting the ruins of the only surviving antebellum railroad complex in the U.S. The project transformed a series of dilapidated freight warehouses originally built in 1853 by African slaves and incorporated them into a complex that includes galleries, art studios, classrooms, a 250-seat theatre, and public gardens. The 82,0000-square-foot expansion intentionally links the site’s historical and geographic context with its contemporary purpose; once part of the Underground Railroad, the Evans Center now celebrates African American art.
