Idea Factory in Shenzhen, China by MVRDV

Wednesday, December 14th, 2022

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV has completed construction of the Idea Factory, a transformation of a former factory building in the Shenzhen urban village of Nantou that sustainably reusing and improving the building instead of demolishing and rebuilding it. The project contains a mixture of offices for the Urban Research Institute of China Vanke and offices for rent – yet despite this programme, its distinguishing features are public in nature: a stairway cuts its way through the six-storey building, leading to a rooftop with a series of “rooms” enclosed by living bamboo “walls”, offering a variety of amenities and activities.

GAÎTÉ MONTPARNASSE in Paris, France by MVRDV

Saturday, November 26th, 2022

Article source: MVRDV

Gaîté Montparnasse, the MVRDV-designed transformation of a city block just a short walk from Paris’ Tour Montparnasse, is now open. The project has rationalised the existing uses of the mixed-use block – which included a hotel, shopping centre, office space and a library – and densified the area by adding social housing and a kindergarten. In doing so, the building has become more welcoming and accessible to pedestrians, while reusing significant parts of the previous structure from the 1970s following circular economy principles.

Completed in 1974, the original design of the “Îlot Vandamme” by Pierre Dufau was a landmark in its time, with the strong vertical lines of what is now the Pullman Hotel tower creating an unmissable presence in Montparnasse. At the same time, the plinth of rough textured concrete, boxy reflective glass, and red steel lattices epitomised the foibles of its era: surrounded by wide boulevards, the block was dominated by cars, and when viewed from the street looked introverted and unwelcoming.

Heidelberg Cement Headquarters in Germany by AS+P Albert Speer + Partner GmbH

Wednesday, October 19th, 2022

Article source: AS+P Albert Speer + Partner GmbH

The HeidelbergCement AG headquarters provide space for 1,000 staff. AS+P consistently pursued the client’s claim of “Concrete Excellence”: With curved façade elements, tree-like struts in the foyer, and the casino ceiling, the building shows the diverse potential of concrete as a material with a sustainability concept based on the Platinum Standard.

The design for the new building of the corporate headquarters is based on the architectural approach of the existing buildings and interprets them in a new, modern form. The new building interacts closely with the green space and offers spectacular views of Heidelberg from its unobstructed vantage point right at the beginning of the Berliner Strasse. The head building forms a sovereign prelude to the development of the adjoining quarter on the northern bank of the Neckar.

Public space development, along with the city waterfront revamp will be further endorsed by a multifunctional environment with shops, shopping malls, offices, coffee houses, and restaurants. Chongqing Gaoke Group Ltd Office in China by Aedas

Friday, September 23rd, 2022

Article source: Aedas

Completed in 2022, Aedas-designed Chongqing Gaoke Group Ltd Office Project utilises a simple elegant form. It is derived from the northern light, which creates the twisting shape of the 180m tall tower to form expressive double-curved surfaces on the building façades. Vertical lines accentuate the minimalistic form and through the effect of reflection and refraction from the glass create a design statement that celebrates light as the major tool to define architecture.

Stands at the north of Xingfu Plaza, the project is located in Jiangbei District of Chongqing. The surrounding environment has already been developed in a spacious plot, and one big challenge for the designer is to interpret planning concept of “solar”, into an iconic landmark well-integrated in the existing community context.
