The halle Freyssinet, formerly known as “Messageries d’Austerlitz”, is a shed for goods transhipment which was built in the late 1920s by the French engineer Eugène Freyssinet, as part of a programme for the extension and modernization of facilities of the Compagnie d’Orléans.
This remarkable building in prestressed reinforced concrete is located in the urban renewal area of the Paris Rive Gauche ZAC [Mixed Development Area], lying below the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. This innovative technique for applying concrete – prestressing – was used to provide the shed with an exceptionally slender loadbearing structure (less than 5 cm thick at the roof ridge in certain places). As a result, it has been listed since 2012 in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments.
Jerde – an architecture, design, and planning firm best known for its large-scale international developments – decided to put itself in the role of client when establishing its new office in Los Angeles. They called on Rapt’s expertise in interior workplace design and asked for help in finding and designing their new headquarters, facilitating the firm’s move from Venice Beach to the heart of downtown LA.
Now, in the old CalEdison building at the corner of Fifth Street and Grand Avenue, Jerde has firmly established itself in the fabric of the city – and arguably in greater California as well.

Many of NCTU students suggest proposal of starting up their own business every year. Therefore, we provide them a free flowing platform gathering their ideas. With different duration, form and group size, how we define this space? By involving the metaphor of trees and birds, we want to show the relationship between the centre and students. Instead of using fixed walls, we create the roof in the ceiling as the metaphor for “the space under trees.” Four invisible areas are defined. Students can have discussion here, as well as developing their own field. Having four invisible trees in the ceiling, leading from the inner area to the corridor and staircase lobby. We hope students will be leading to our “Nest” and construct their own “Nest” as well.
“The juxtaposition of various spaces was further enhanced by the material selection. Inspired by Hong Kong’s scenery, the open plan’s materials are soft, natural and calm, featuring shades of muted green, pastel fabrics and a carpet inspired by pebble paths.” – Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui
“In contrast, the social spaces introduce wooden finishes and pops of accented colours; intended to create an energetic and positive ambiance. The legibility of these social spaces encourages collaboration to boost productivity as well as staff wellbeing.” – Lorène Faure
