Akurad law office in Roeselare, Belgium by Declerck – Daels, Architecten

Wednesday, September 16th, 2020

Article source: Declerck – Daels, Architecten

Akurad law office erected a unique and hybrid building in the small port of Roeselare, an industrial and busy area along the canal.

The project is an example of a sustainable re-use of an abandoned site.  The new office has the same footprint as the former warehouse.  The building consists of three playful volumes, stacked in different angles.  It is remarkable, refined and very uncommon compared to the industrial surrounding.  Both massive and light, open and intimate.

Pukou Community Center in Nanjing, China by Brearley Architects + Urbanists

Saturday, September 12th, 2020

Article source: Brearley Architects + Urbanists

A new district on the fringe of Nanjing, formulated on the green dream of modernist planning, and comprised mostly of large autonomous gated housing communities has left Pukou as a well-engineered city but one with limited opportunity for dynamic public life. This project brings an intense moment of urbanity to the district, maximising public space and opening opportunities for the emergence of public life.

Ningbo-based Innovation Centre in China by RMJM

Wednesday, September 9th, 2020

Article source: RMJM

RMJM RED have won a competition for a mixed-use development that will become the Ningbo Yongjiang Innovation Centre. The studio’s design is a response to the unique setting that is at a threshold between the urban and the natural. The site is framed by Zhongshan East road to the south and Houtang River to the north. The team envisaged the development as an archipelago of islands rising out of and energised by the river. The arrangement of these building ‘islands’ encourages unrestricted movement around the development at the ground level and offers a unique street-level experience.

Canal Street in Seattle, Washington by Heliotrope Architects

Tuesday, September 8th, 2020

Article source: Heliotrope Architects

The Canal Street project takes a narrow, commercially-zoned, urban-infill lot, formerly occupied by a small, rundown 1950s-era house and transforms it into a new, forward-thinking 5,233-square-foot, commercial office building for two creative agencies, Turnstyle (a graphic design firm) and Stoke (a branding firm). The 30-foot-wide x 100-foot-deep lot is situated along a shoreline greenbelt across the street from the ship canal in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.

Office of New Silk Road E-Commerce Company in Xi’an, China by HONG Designworks

Besides a well-known architect, Le Corbusier is also a chromatist. He emphasized many times that colors played an important role in space. Based on his masterpiece Architectural Polychromy, he summarized two colour collections in 1931 and 1959, with 63 colors arranged in different spatial moods. In the article “Purism” he co-authored with Amédée Ozenfant in 1920, he mentioned that shades could be arranged hierarchically and defined the first range of colors as “la grande gamme”, which consists of hues such as ochre, red, brown, white, black, blue, etc. and of course their derivatives. According to Le Corbusier, those shades are stable, powerful and capable of holding the canvas because they can be mixed harmoniously; those are essential colours that can be utilized in all great eras; and those are the ones necessary to express the sense of volume in painting.

Co working offices in London by Stamos Yeoh Architects

Monday, September 7th, 2020

Article source: Stamos Yeoh Architects

We’ve recently completed a co-working office development project in Stratford, London for our client us&co which features what we think to be a unique one-off helical pre-cast concrete staircase. The stairs travel from ground to first floor level, involves 20 reinforced concrete treads, each one cast individually from a bespoke fibreglass mould, and then laid above each other.

In order to support the staircase during construction, each tread was propped up with timber formwork, and as the stairs went up, three tensile steel cables were fed through each tread, all the way from base to top, and thereafter tied to steel structure at the very top & bottom and then post – tensioned (tightened up) in order to pull all the treads together. Then the formwork was removed and the stairs remain self-supporting.
