The Children’s Park, a linear garden with eight attractions on raised platforms, has giant bobbin-shaped elements in wooden lattice sheltering the exhibits and children’s activities from rain and sun. Fragments of domesticated nature where the natural and artificial coexist, the exhibits were designed to privilege the organic language of nature as opposed to a more formal architectural vocabulary.
Urban Landscapes such as public spaces and parks are among the places that can enhance the quality of space in a city. Well-designed, attractive and innovative spaces contribute to a sense of place and can produce strong emotional responses.
Kwint Architecten designed a community centre for the Paddepoel-Zuid & Tuinwijk districts in de dutch City of Groningen. The community center is located in a parc, called the Bessemoerpark, as a link between the two districts. As part of the transformation of the parc, Kwint Architecten was assigned to design a building with it’s own character, independent from the parc. The building is set up as an unpretentious master volume with an elongated shape. The volume is placed crosswise in the elongated parc, as a result of which transforms the building in a link between the two adjacent city districts. The entrance of the building is situated alongside a footpath between these districts. By means of rounding of two of the four corners the building derives a distinctive character. As a result of the rounding, the front and side facades melt together and prevents the use of the outdoor spaces at only one side. Instead, the shape stimulates the use of all the outdoor space alongside the building for activities. The building is designed to be a guest in the parc and to interact with the parc. Two elements are a added to the design. At one side a cavity is formed to mark the entrance, at the other side a porch is added which connects the main rooms to the park.

The Forum redevelopment is a holistic design, integrating a new office building, sculpture park and events plaza and there by revitalising the entire Exchange Square development. The compact and exquisitely detailed new building opens up the site visually and physically, creating a significant public space designed as a series of stone platforms linked with water features and planting. The design by Keith Griffiths is inspired by precious gems. The perfect cube of the building is dramatically tilted to create a grand entrance from the plaza. The geometry of the tilted plane is resolved into the elegant diamond cut façade of the building. As a Grade-A office in the heart of the Central district, the column-free office interior with its 2.9m of floor-to-ceiling space evokes a tailor-made environment with ample natural daylight from all elevations.
The Paleisbrug (Palace bridge) is a raised park and pedestrian and cycle bridge in one. The new bridge has also been fitted with a large solar collector, which will supply the surrounding area with energy.
Parco di Piantonia overlooks the valley of the Sporzana stream. Friedrich’s “Wanderer” observes the landscape in a sea of fog. The form of the design uses the relationship between the landscape and the existing trees: the path provides structure and divides up the green space, as far up as the viewpoint. A service block indicates the entrance announcing the route, while the rest areas lie alongside the path, complementing it. A route, a place to socialise, for children to play…
