Théodore Gouvy Theatre in Freyming-Merlebach, France by Dominique Coulon & associés

Friday, April 6th, 2018

Article source: Dominique Coulon & associés

Freyming-Merlebach is a town with a substantial industrial past, in a part of Lorraine that developed in the 19th century, driven by the coalmining industry.

Since the closure of the mines in the 1990s, this part of north-eastern France has seen a sharp increase in unemployment, and culture is seen as one possibility for resolving the accompanying social and economic difficulties in the town, as has been the case in the neighbouring Ruhr region. The historic theatre in Freyming-Merlebach had deteriorated, and a number of cracks appeared as the result of disused underground tunnels. The old 500-seat auditorium needed to be replaced, and it had also become too small.

104 Social Housing and Home Ownership in Ivry-sur-Seine, France by aEa, agence Engasser+associés

Sunday, April 1st, 2018

Article source: v2com

Located on a plot of land in Ivry-sur-Seine and close to the river, this 104-unit project had to adapt to the physical constraints of its environment while enhancing the brief with added value. Composed of three apartment buildings, two of which are for private ownership and the third for social housing, the buildings stand in a verdant environment with a landscaped inner garden, visual openings onto the Seine and roof terraces enhanced by flower- and kitchen-gardens open to everyone.

Arranged in a staggered design, the three buildings are broken down into varying volumes, materials and tones so as to create variations of scale and embellish them with slimmer lines.

A dense, urban project that the agency has transformed with panache into a habitat favourable to encounters and conviviality in a bucolic setting.

Alpin & Stylehotel DIE SONNE in Partschins, Italy by monovolume architecture + design

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

Article source: monovolume architecture + design

The new extension building of Hotel Sonne, realized in 2017, is centrally located on Peter Mitterhofer Place in Partschins. Considered as an independent building, it only is connected by a bridge to the existing hotel. The Rasner House, formerly located at this place, was demolished in 2012 in order to create parking space for the existing Hotel Sonne. The new structure with its location specific saddle roof and the natural wooden elements integrates perfectly into the original village’s structure and provides the building with a traditional appearance. Towards the village center the facade opens up to a bar area with a large glass surface which appears to be a flowing transition to the interior. The south facade is generously glazed which allows a breathtaking panorama to Adige Valley. The modern rooms also feature well-chosen traditional elements which harmonize well with the overall concept of the design.

Thursday, March 15th, 2018

Article source: LABICS

Winning competition entry for the redevelopment of an urban area, including the transformation of an existing bus depot to integrate a mixture of uses including office, retail space and residential units.

This project is part of the Municipality of Rome’s initiative to redevelop a number of transport depots within the city in conjunction with local public transport authority ATAC. It involves the regeneration of a neighborhood with a weak identity but with good growth potential due to its location at the edge of the city centre. Labics’ aim therefore was to create a new centre for the local community, but also to increase its profile as a place of transition with privileged access to the city centre.

Article source: Architects of Invention

The building is located on a very tight site, surrounded by residential blocks, a music school and nursery in Moscow’s historic city centre, off Arbat Street, the main, pedestrianised shopping street which runs for almost one kilometre through the city.

AI’s work involved the complete demolition of an existing 4-storey office block, replacing it with a new 7-storey office building with a single level underground car park and public space at the base of the building.
