Concept: ‘Panoramic’ swimming pool

Although the principal dream for years of a swimming pool in his small town garden, he preferred to first realize the renovation of his 17th century mansion. While the contractors were about to start the works, an abandoned school building, adjacent to his garden, was offered for sale. The principal did not hesitate, works were stopped and the school building was bought.  After many analyses and intense discussions, the principal decided to realize the swimming pool first.

Thessaloniki’s Wet Dream in Greece by Not a Number Architects

Friday, August 16th, 2013

Article source: Not a Number Architects

The project is a proposal for a subterranean public bath beneath a central urban plaza with a glazed roof at street level. Responding to the city’s ambitious plans for the total redesign of Eleftherias Square (i.e. Freedom Square) into a landmark that will become a magnet for the city and beyond, our proposal sets to re-establish Thessaloniki’s long lasting culture of public baths as a form of built social space par excellence.

Nevis Pool and Garden Pavilion in Washington, DC by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Located in a neighborhood bordering Washington, DC, this suburban site has the advantage of being located adjacent to woodlands.  A contemporary house surrounded by mature trees and manicured gardens anchors the site.  A new swimming pool, stone walls, and terraces located behind the existing house organize the rear yard and establishes a dialogue between the existing house and a new pavilion.  New paths, trees and structured plantings reinforce the geometry.

Heatherlands Pool House in Devon, UK by Satellite Architects (designed with Vectorworks)

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Article source: Satellite Architects

Heatherlands is a substantial addition to an existing house, built in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Dorset Devon border. It responds carefully to the folding of the landscape and roof pitches of the existing house, The folds create splits which highlight views, both concealing and opening to them. A new living room forms a transition point between the old and the new, collecting reflected views and light. Situated to the West of the existing house, the structure takes the stance of a traditional outbuilding, acting as a paddock boundary whilst protecting the gardens. The addition defines a new approach to the building, entrance court and outdoor terrace to the South. Adopting a number of sustainable strategies the building includes passive ventilation, sustainable materials and highly insulated construction. The existing building is wrapped in shingle, which will weather together with the new larch rain screens, covering the addition.
