Renovation and enlargement of a private house in Faenza, Italy by Bartoletti Cicognani architettura e design

Thursday, July 23rd, 2015

Article source: Bartoletti Cicognani architettura e design

The building was originally a farmhouse, built before 1938. It is now subjected to a design-based zoning constraint, with the obligation to keep all its architectural hallmarks unchanged: the simple roof cornice, tiny and without boxed eave; the narrow window frames, which allow the interior to receive as much natural lightning as possible; the spare red brick columns. There must not be any TV antenna, no decorum of any kind, no more than a few undecorated fireplaces and only subtle colors should be used for the plaster coating.

ENIGMA in Colombo, Sri Lanka by Narein Perera

Friday, June 12th, 2015

Article source: Narein Perera

The form of the house is primarily generated in creating the concept of an “Enigma” in the mind of the person entering. Guided by intermediate open spaces, the entrance court, the pool, subsequently arriving at the main volume of the living room where the climax of the ‘hidden’ garden is fully experienced. The entrance court envisioned as a part of the street on which the 20perch site forms the end block, defined by the continued building lines of the adjoining plots, the random rubble vertical envelope and pergola horizontal plane,  serve to contain, pause, experience the powerful shadows the sun paints, overwhelm, announcing arrival.

Villa Nacka in Sweden by Gustav Appell Arkitektkontor

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

Article source: Gustav Appell Arkitektkontor

This private house is shaped as simple volumes contrasting the dramatic topography and the leafy greenery of the surroundings. The development restrictions of the site and the beautiful, tall oak trees did not allow for any standardized solutions. Instead the limitations became the starting point for the initial sketches. The result is a white L-shaped wooden house framing a secluded courtyard. The geometry of the house makes the most of the surrounding views, maximizes the development rights and creates a terrace high among the branches of the oak-trees.

Anguilla House in Fukuoka, Japan by Shinji Yoshida

Friday, April 17th, 2015

Article source: Shinji Yoshida

This project is a family house for five people. The site is long and narrow like the bed of an eel, and is 20 feet by 60 feet.

The location was initially difficult to maximize sunlight because of the surrounding houses that crowded the site. However, through a series of steps a resolution was achieved. First, three parking spaces were created at the owner’s request.
