Bay Window House in Mosjøen, Norway by Atelier Oslo

Thursday, January 14th, 2021

Article source: Atelier Oslo

Situated in a valley at the mouth of the river Vefsn, the town of Mosjøen provides an ice free and safe harbour close to Lofoten. Today the town is dominated by residential areas of detached houses in a strict grid plan.

The Bay Window house has four apartments designed for people who want to replace their single-family house with an apartment in favour of a simpler life. It has therefore been an ambition to create a project with apartments that have many of the qualities found in a single-family house.

Yo-Ju Courtyard House in Clyde Hill, Washington by Wittman Estes Architecture+Lands

Monday, January 11th, 2021

Article source: Wittman Estes Architecture+Lands

What happens to the suburban single-family home as cities become dense and privacy becomes limited? It must look inward. Through a series of thresholds from opaque to transparent, Yo-Ju Courtyard House, which means “secluded living” in Mandarin Chinese, embraces the future of suburban density by establishing a private experience despite being adjacent to a busy arterial street in the Clyde Hill neighborhood of Bellevue.

Ardnalea in Kildare, Ireland by Broadstone Architects

Monday, January 4th, 2021

Article source: Broadstone Architects

Broadstone Architects were commissioned to design a single family dwelling and stables in rural Ireland. The form of the building itself is twofold – one side, the living area, reaching high in the style of a barrel-vaulted barn abutted to a lower mono-pitch roof, as witnessed in agricultural structures throughout rural County Kildare and Ireland. As these were originally built using corrugated metal in a dark red protective paint, a similar roofing material, unpatinated copper, is used. The bedroom area with internal courtyard is lower in height with a low gradient mono-pitch roof and a regular rhythm of openings to associate it with traditional stable buildings. The white rendered walls, and extended enclosure walls, which tie disparate elements of the dwelling together are analogous to typical traditional farmyards where white coloured stone and rendered walls tie together an archipelago of outhouses, dwellings, barns and stores. In effect the proposed design attempts to provide a dwelling in character with its surroundings by promoting its environment and applying a relatively traditional agricultural building language in a modern architectural style.

Lone Madrone in Orcas Island, Washington by Heliotrope Architects

Wednesday, December 30th, 2020

Article source: Heliotrope Architects

Located on a rocky, wind-swept south facing shoreline; this retreat home nestles into the landscape to harmonize with its surroundings and minimize exposure to weather. The home is a vacation retreat for a family of four, who desired a low-impact home with a strong connection to land and sea. The design solution utilizes a simple ‘wedge’ shape geometry, mimicking the hillside slope beyond, and is tucked into a natural depression in the shoreline in order to diminish its visual impact. Living spaces open up completely on north (garden) and south (water) sides via a custom lift-slide door system. Bedrooms focus primarily on the more private, forested slope to the west and the kitchen opens onto an adjacent a rock promontory to the east. Due to the extreme weather exposure of the site, major openings are paired with rolling wall panels to protect them from punishing winter storms, as well as to provide security when unoccupied. The finish palette consists of local materials including douglas fir (floors, trim), western red cedar (siding, wall and ceiling cladding) and pacific madrone (furniture).

La Doyenne in Quebec, Canada by naturehumaine architecture & design

Saturday, December 19th, 2020

Article source: naturehumaine architecture & design

La Doyenne is a renovation and the expansion project of a Victorian house built in 1887, a few steps away from Square Saint-Louis in Montreal. In a high-density built environment characteristic of the Plateau Mont Royal, the main challenge to meet the desire of its new occupants was to design an extension in the back yard preserving their privacy from the side and rear buildings.

Schizophrenic Gesamtkunstwerk in Wanstead, London by Space Group of Architects

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020

Article source: Space Group of Architects

This project is many things, but boring is certainly not one of them. As the name suggests, it certainly has a split personality but also contains an avalanche of details. There is the original Edwardian part which sits in stark contrast with the contemporary volume at the back. This approach manages to address the different desires of the two clients: There are the historical, slightly romantic rooms in the old house counterbalanced by the contemporary, minimal but warm box at the back.

EQ in Kyiv, Ukraine by Andrey Sokruta

Tuesday, November 24th, 2020

Article source: Andrey Sokruta

Private residence designed and built for sale. The owner turned to Andrey Sokruta Workshop to create a property that everyone could potentially enjoy!

The architecture was intended to be modern and functional. The interior was supposed to be as neutral as possible, but stylish and attractive. It was important to strike a balance and not go too far in the direction of too pretentious minimalism, to avoid particulars. Therefore, the designer-architect Andrey Sokruta decided to work in the direction of a comfortable minimalism. The working title of the project is also understandable and natural EQ – Equilibrium, which means “place of balance”.

ShadowBox in Toronto, Canada by Johnson Chou Inc

Saturday, November 21st, 2020

Article source: Johnson Chou Inc

ShadowBox is an exploration of the essence of architecture: to enable the witnessing of the passage of time by capturing the elusive play of light and shadow; and to engender a heightened sense of movement through varying spatial scales and experiences.

This includes the expansion and compression of single, double and triple height spaces, and through one’s engagement of interior elements such as bridges and stairs. The house is configured to capture the ever-changing light and shadow effects in various areas of the residence. The shadows cast in the interior reveal the juxtaposition between the permanence of the architecture and the ephemeral of the natural.
