Central Square in Warsaw, Poland by ELEMENT

Monday, January 28th, 2019

Article source: ELEMENT

Central Square – known now as Parade Square – is a Warsaw main landmark for tourists and citizens. Mostly because of its central location on the map of the city and direct relation with Palace of Culture and Science – the highest and most iconic building in Poland.
Everyday loads of people are passing through the Parade Square on their way to work, train station or just to handle their daily duties. Despite being located in a communicational and administrative heart of the City, the space is excluded from everyday metropolitan life. As meeting point or destination for spending time, its role seems to be marginal.

The reason of the lack of interest is “the great nothingness”. There is no specified development plan for the Square so people feel free to use it in random ways.

Rehabilitation of Sant Antoni Market in Spain by RavetllatRibas arquitectes

Sunday, January 27th, 2019

Article source: RavetllatRibas arquitectes

The Mercat de Sant Antoni building, designed by the architect Antoni Rovira I Trias and the engineer José M. Cornet i Mas in 1882, is one of the most iconic buildings in Barcelonás Eixample district. It occupies an entire block and is shaped like a Greek cross, its geometry and dimension typicle of Eixample alignments. The central octagon, crowned with a large dome, is typical of the crossing of the Plan Cerdà. The market’s strategic position with respect to Ciutat Vella and the ring formed by the Ronda has placed it at the centre of a busy shopping hub that transcends the boundaries of the building itself and spills over onto the surrounding neighbourhood. Over the years, concentrating trade into this one district has led to the emergence of different constructions around the market to house temporary street market stalls. These -seasonal and Sunday – markets are without a dount worth preserving and promoting, given that they not only complement the services of the market selling fresh produce, but they also manage to turn the entire complex into one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks.

Article source: WJ STUDIO

BO Space is located in HE Park where used to be an old industry site and now a culture & innovation gathering place in Xixi Wetland in Hangzhou. In the designer’s view, the city is expanding way to fast that we are losing the old imprint of our city while we are losing our culture as well. Buildings are getting old, but we can keep its vitality through a design and transformation. Bo Space is not just a restaurant bar but also a complex space. It does not only provide people a place to stay but also presents a way of living. People can find out what they really like here, even if it is just a ray of sunshine, a picture show, a good meal, a slow pace, or a way back to life.

In 2013, the Fuzhou Government hosted an international invited competition for the Strait Culture and Art Centre with the goal of strengthening the cultural image of the city and the Mawei New Town development area. PES-Architects’ winning proposal aims to offer an extraordinary experience for ordinary users by creating a new type of “cultural shopping mall”. Tower of Bricks in China by Interval Architects

Monday, January 14th, 2019

Article source: Interval Architects

Place and history

The project began with an abandoned Hoffman brick kiln, which was located between Hengshui wetland park and the city proper of Hengshui.  It was formerly a place where factories nearby used to drain their sewage water onto.  As the only building on wetland, the brick kiln was highly recognizable with its chimney.  However the Hoffman kiln was gradually abandoned due to the national policy that banned the burning of bricks out of clay as an environmental protection measure.  The building was eventually demolished by the government due to its collapsing condition.  With the new governmental plan to convert the wetland into a botanic park, the project called for the design of a botanic art center on the same site of the former kiln.  We decided that the memory and history of the demolished kiln has to be recalled and remembered with the new architecture. We hope to connect the past and the present of the place with the project.

Beverly Center Renovation in Los Angeles, California by Studio Fuksas

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

Article source: Studio Fuksas

Roma-based architectural and urban design firm Studio Fuksas, led by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, was selected as the design architect for the reimagination of the 886,000 sq. ft. Beverly Center in Los Angeles, California.

Thirty-four months of construction and five hundred million dollars later a reimagined Center was officially unveiled on November 2, 2018. The mall, a monolithic eight-story structure located at the edge of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, now boosts a new glimmering white skin made of a highly textured stucco surmounting a metal mesh which changes transparency through the day and according to the viewer’s vantage point.

Zallinger in Seiser Alm, Italy by NOA* – NETWORK OF ARCHITECTURE

Zallinger: A Scattered Hotel at High Altitude

With the renovation and expansion of the Zallinger Refuge at the Seiser Alm/ Alpe di Siusi, a new model of hospitality was born and serving as a good example of responsible tourism.

An example of a historical and landscape recovery intervention in a high mountain context. The nineteenth-century barns are reborn as mini-chalets, which bring back the charm of an alpine village. The South Tyrolean tradition is combined with comfort, quality of design and sustainability. The ClimaHotel was built with maximum environmental protection in every aspect of the construction. The project, designed by noa*, an architecture studio in South Tyrol that has long been committed to developing innovative models of receptivity and green tourism (they were recently included by Dezeen in the short list of the 20 emerging international architecture firms for the year 2018).
