City To The Water – Our River City (Development Plan) in Randers, Denmark by C.F. Møller Architects

Sunday, October 20th, 2019

Article source: C.F. Møller Architects

The development plan “Our River City” adapts the future of Randers to the environment, connects the city with the water and develops the attractive areas between the medieval city centre, the river Gudenå and Randers Fjord into a unique city borne of the river.

The future of Randers interacts much more closely with the river – its natural habitat and its recreational opportunities. The development of the city towards the Gudenå with a focus on sustainable nature and climate adaptation makes Randers an innovative and future-proof city.

The plan creates two different ‘blue’ spaces that characterise and activate a number of new urban neighbourhoods – a strong natural space along the river Gudenå and ‘urban water space’ around the northern harbour basin, which can serve as a recreational basin and rainwater reservoir through a sluice. With these two distinctive water spaces, the historic connection to the Gudenå is rediscovered with new natural and cultural experiences in the middle of the city.
It has been underlined that the project’s vision is financially feasible and will be instrumental in strengthening the city – both for Randers’ own citizens and for newcomers.

Enrico Fermi School in Turin, Italy by BDR bureau

Monday, September 30th, 2019

Article source: BDR bureau

Turin-based architectural firm BDR bureau completes the transformation of the new Enrico Fermi School in Turin, the winning project of an international competition launched in 2016 by “Torino Fa Scuola”. The initiative, promoted by the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Fondazione Agnelli, in collaboration with the City of Turin and “Fondazione per la Scuola”, embodies a cultural, pedagogical and architectural reflection on the new learning spaces of the Italian school.

The existing school building, built in the 1960s in the Nizza Millefonti district between the former industrial area of the Lingotto and the Po river in the south-east area of Turin, has been extended and it is functionally rethought. The new educational needs – in which the school becomes an integral part of the community and merges with the urban fabric – represents the future of education and architecture for the Italian school.

Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, Albania by 51N4E

Friday, September 27th, 2019

Article source: 51N4E

This project for the restructuring of Skanderbeg Square is the result of an international architecture competition won by 51N4E in 2008. The competition’s proposal, conceived in collaboration with Albanian artist Anri Sala, reorganizes Tirana’s central square, a vast ex-communist space, in a simple yet radical way. In a complex and dense urban context, on this site that is both the core of the Albanian capital city and a symbol for the whole country, the project installs a generous pedestrian area. The square presents itself as a void in the chaos of the city, a flat pyramid lined by a densely planted periphery, formed by a collection of old and new public spaces and gardens. The resulting green belt acts as an antechamber negotiating the transition between the congested city and the square. The oppressive monumentality of Communist architecture is counteracted by the ample and low pyramid making up the square: when standing at its tip, the citizens find themselves at par with the authoritarian architecture of the past. They can contemplate the buildings defining Albania’s past, suddenly opened up to new ways of reading, and embrace them as a history on which to build on.

Da Wang Jing Mixed-use Development in Beijing, China by Aedas

Tuesday, September 24th, 2019

Article source: Aedas

Standing dominantly at the second largest CBD in Beijing, the Da Wang Jing Mixed-use Development designed by Andrew Bromberg at Aedas, is a dynamic commercial gateway at junction of the arterial expressway from the airport to central Beijing and the North 5th Ring Road, where it can be seen from distance like a shining urban oasis. The design juxtaposes the staid image of Grade A offices and corporate headquarters together with an amicable spatial experience to all users, making a vivid interpretation on Andrew Bromberg’s concept of “co-existence of people and nature”.

The five towers of the development are sensibly distant from one another, providing generous public spaces with greenery extending all the way to the Wangjing Park north to site. The design aims to accentuate its relationship to the surrounding greeneries, guaranteeing maximum permeability and encouraging public access. With its soft flowing garden-like temperament, the development easily distinguishes itself from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding commercial neighborhood as a truly human-scaled architectural expression.

Niederhafen River Promenade in Hamburg, Germany by Zaha Hadid Architects

Wednesday, August 28th, 2019

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

Located at Niederhafen on the Elbe River between St. Pauli Landungsbrücken and Baumwall in Hamburg, the upgraded 625m river promenade is integral to the modernisation and reinforcement of the city’s flood protection system.

In the aftermath of storm surge floods in February 1962 that caused 315 fatalities and destroyed the homes of 60,000 residents, between 1964 and 1968 Hamburg developed a barrier on the banks of the Elbe at Niederhafen to protect the city against floods up to a height of 7.20m above sea level.
Modern hydrology and computer simulations have since analysed and forecast the city’s flooding characteristics with greater accuracy; calculating that an increase in the barrier height of 0.80m was required to protect Hamburg from future winter storm surges and extreme high tides.

Inspections of Niederhafen’s existing flood barrier in 2006 determined that supporting elements of the existing structure were overburdened and its foundations needed significant reinforcement. At this time, the city of Hamburg organized a competition to design the redeveloped flood barrier and subsequently awarded the project to Zaha Hadid Architects.

Oxígeno Shopping Mall in Heredia, Costa Rica by Jerde

Sunday, August 18th, 2019

Article source: Jerde

There is a well-known saying that echoes throughout Costa Rica: “Pura Vida.” Locals use the term for everything from greeting one another ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’, to saying that ‘everything is great.’ However, the expression is about more than words.  It’s an emotion, it’s an attitude, it’s happiness, and it’s a way of life. And so, to truly be successful, the region’s largest new commercial development needed not just to attract visitors, but it needed to fully capture Pura Vida.

The project – Oxígeno – delivers a new concept of a Human Playground that bridges retail, entertainment, sports, culture, education and gastronomy. More than just a shopping center or lifestyle center, Oxígeno is a dynamic extension of the local community. Part of a multi-phase mixed-use development, this first phase includes 45,000m2 GLA of retail space and more than 15,000m2 of green areas designed around the way residents live, work, and play. Beyond mere commercial offerings, Oxígeno embraces the existing community with ample green areas opened to the public, a jogging trail, and improvements to the public transportation infrastructure including the donation of a train station, constructions of a boulevard connecting two highways, and the widening of front rows to facilitate the operation of public buses. Since its opening in November, Oxígeno has received more than 1.5 million visitors.
