Al Haramain High-speed Rail Stations in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Foster + Partners

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Article source: Foster + Partners

The Haramain High-speed Railway is a major infrastructure project for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, connecting the cities of Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and the developing King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC). The stations are conceived as gateways to each city, filled with places to meet, shop, eat and shelter from the sun. Altogether, the large, flexible stations will cover an area more than 30 times the size of London’s Trafalgar Square and will initially accommodate an anticipated 60 million passengers – approximately six times the number of passengers that take the Eurostar from St Pancras each year. This is expected to increase to 135 million passengers by 2042.

Malmö Central Station in Sweden by Metro Arkitekter

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Article source: Metro Arkitekter

Malmö Central Station has always looked to move with the times. Since opening in 1858, the city’s first railway station has been rebuilt, extended and modernised to cater for changing passenger needs over the decades.

The original Terminal Building is in two sections. The smaller Green Hall was a waiting room for third-class passengers in the 1920s. The turquoise tiling has since regained its former lustre and the limestone floor is from Skånska Ignaberga. The Central Hall started out as an open platform building. Its old brick walls and herring-bone tiled floor have been carefully preserved. Beneath the domed roof, 15 shops and restaurants provide an inviting environment for people to meet and eat.

Oslo Central Station in Oslo, Norway by Jensen & Skodvin Arkitektkontor

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Article source: Jensen & Skodvin Arkitektkontor

Oslo S, or Oslo Central Station, is the most important station in Norway. For reasons of sustainability there is a desire to increase the importance of railway transport in the future, thereby increasing further the strain on the capacity of the already congested junction at Oslo S. Previous expansions have been haphazard and partly temporary, and the proposal aims to reestablish well ordered and ample public spaces that are well connected to the surrounding urban fabric.
