On the rolling landscape of a former farmer’s field, today enclosed by suburban development, a new care and recreation centre for the elderly takes form. The plan is articulated in such a way as to leave breathing space between the new building and the surrounding urban tissue, while realising the necessary programme for a community with a growing need for such facilities.
The aim is resilience — a community center built to be a resource for all and a refuge in times of trouble — in service to the DC Department of Parks + Recreation mission to promote health, conservation, and universal access to parks. In order to meet this intention, resilience was considered from two main angles: site influence because the facility must respond to specific site challenges and community influence because the facility should be a center that builds resiliency within the community.
Sasaki’s addition to the student recreation center at the University of Arizona in Tucson cuts an impressive silhouette against the Sonoran Desert landscape. The 54,000-square-foot addition doubles the amount of space for cardio-fitness and strength conditioning and diversifies the center’s recreational program offerings. The structure is a genuine expression of the student body’s commitment to health, wellbeing, and sustainability—inspired and informed by the very people whom the center is intended to engage. Since opening in 2010, participation has increased 91%, general use of fitness equipment has increased 150%, wait times have been eliminated, membership has increased 10.5%, and 10 new programs have been initiated. The building is LEED® Platinum Certified—the first collegiate recreational facility to be designated as such.
The first phase of the Antalya Konyaalti coastline rehabilitation project, which covers an area of approximately 100 hectares has been opened to the public on 15th of June, 2018. This area was the subject of a national architectural competition opened in 2014 and Ozer\\Urger Architects’ proposal was the winning design to be implemented in collaboration with Tugay Architects.
The Mediterranean Avenue was the first executed phase of the Antalya Konyaalti coastline rehabilitation project that also includes the Museum Square and Variant, Beachpark and Olbia Square as four different characteristic areas.
Rest Area Niemenharju is located on European highway E75 which runs from Greece in the south to North Cape all the way in the North of Europe. After a long drive, it’s a perfect place to stop for the night and take in the natural environment. The Rest Area is located on a beautiful spot next to a large pond and a ridge (in Finnish harju, hence the name) bordering lake Kolima, which is a remnant from the ice age. The Rest Area takes its inspiration from the surrounding nature. It offers a break from driving, with beautiful, unobstructed views to the water.
For many rural communities, the school and its activities are the heartbeat of the community. The significance of this relationship is amplified for this high school which is located in the largest geographic school district in Iowa (555 square miles). With the addition of new administrative, recreation, and music spaces, this project strengthens the relationship between the school and its community.
A project that was born from the desire of commissioning a recurrence and innovate so not usual, by way of \”experimenting\” with new forms of activity, and that turns into a new architectural expression. A project that engages in Etna area, a crossroads of flows and the heart of the historic center: the main hub of the Catania movida, but above all the history and culture of a dynamic city and always looking for new challenges.
The project aimed to transform this community recreation hub in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner to meet the demands of the growing Kwun Tong district population.
The redevelopment of the Kwun Tong Swimming Pool and Recreation Ground was conducted in two phases. Phase One consisted of a new five-pool complex, which included a FINA standard indoor pool with a 1,500-seat spectator stand for competitions and local events; while Phase Two saw the development of outdoor leisure facilities including an artificial turf soccer pitch with a 200-seat outdoor spectator stand, hard-paved soccer pitches, basketball and volleyball courts, an elderly fitness area, children’s play areas, a roller skating rink and a jogging trail.

On June 7th, Saint-Apollinaire Multifunctional Centre, designed by Parka – Architecture & Design, welcomed its first visitors. Flexible spaces were built to suit a range of cultural, recreational and sports activities. The construction includes a double gymnasium with changing rooms, four multi-purpose rooms and a fully-equipped space for cooking classes. A simple and effective organization provides an interior space that is flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of activities.
The bias of SO/AP agency was to design an urban pattern generated by tools for parametric programming. The urban grid, the study of heights and typology of housing are the optimized results from simulations between a 3D parametric design software, and software for environmental analysis.
All data as solar radiation, natural lighting condition, thermal performance and water consumption have been integrated to the urban design from the beginning.
A urban grid with 20/20m plots – 10m spaced -, is at first uniformly contorted to have the optimize pattern following the contour lines on slopping fields. The simulating of solar potential generates two progressive areas of highest building. It defined two urban attractive areas; each one will be specially focused on winter activities or summer activities. A last parametric control working on plots morphology, define the optimized housing typology and zoning area.
