Villa Molli in Sala Comacina, Italy by Lorenzo Guzzini

Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Article source: Lorenzo Guzzini

The context of the villa construction is Lake Como. The height of insertion of the building is the so-called “half hill” that is the part of mountain that is between the lake and the wood, the part that historically was to agricultural vocation. Among the “new wood” it is still visible the past presence of man, who occupied that territory with stone houses. The land in which the building is located has a double inclination: it hangs from west to east and from south to north and thanks to a retain wall above it, it passes the historic pedestrian street that connects most of the northern villages of the lake. The project site has an amazing view of the Comacina island. This view, however, does not face frontally, but is shifted to one side. The set of perceptions during the survey generated the idea of composition of the building. It consists of two higher volumes at the ends of the lot, connected on the ground floor by a large living room and on the first floor by a terrace.

House in Mishref, Kuwait by Studio Toggle

Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Article source: Studio Toggle

Introduction

The house in Mishref is home to two brothers and their families with their varying lifestyles and needs for privacy and open spaces. An introverted composition of two separate living units grouped around an internal courtyard, the house is an interpretation of the traditional courtyard house.

Presenting a clean and serene façade to the street, the resulting massing manifests as a white monolithic volume poised elegantly on top of a stone cladded podium. Rhythmic arrangement of louvered windows across the façade softens the volume by lending it a sense of lightness.

Article source: STUDIO TWENTY SEVEN ARCHITECTURE

A housing community is the latest reincarnation of this one hundred and ten-year-old structure. Built by Edward Chapman in 1908 over the remnants of his horse stable destroyed by fire and his old coal yard sales shed, Chapman Coal Company Garage and Stables represents a significant contribution to the broad patterns of history and embodies distinctive characteristics of early twentieth century life in Washington, DC. For these reasons the building and site are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.   The identity of the new housing community is derived from this rich history.

The gently alternating textures and the shades of white accentuate the layers in the space and create coziness in the bright interior. A large light grey segment on the living room floor, which outlines the area serves as a substitute to a carpet.

Millerton Farmhouse in New York by Olson Kundig

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

Article source: Olson Kundig

“The concept was a farmhouse compound with a series of buildings attached by walkways. In that regard, it had to feel like it fit into the farmland vernacular of upstate New York, but with a modern architectural language.” Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal

Located on 25 acres of farmland in upstate New York, this family retreat is a modern take on the traditional farmhouse. The home combines contemporary detailing and materials such as blackened steel and concrete with vernacular agricultural building forms. A careful attention to spatial and volumetric relationships allows the home to feel both modern and contextually appropriate for its rural farmland setting.

Ocean View 5 (APERTURE HOUSE) in Bali, Indonesia by ALEXIS DORNIER

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

Article source: ALEXIS DORNIER

This is a meticulously hand crafted 3 story tower consisting of two bedrooms, private garden, deck and pool area. It is situated on a sloping plot amidst the breathtaking western cliffside of Uluwatu, Bali. While the top bedroom offers a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, the middle floor serves as the living room, which opens up to a small pool and outside lounge area. The lower bedroom is an intimate stone cladded space, surrounded by tropical green foliage. The structure is made of carefully selected reused teak and ironwood, glass, steel elements and local limestone. The façade consists of movable vertically slatted screens that filter and soften the piercing tropical sunlight, enabling the external shading of the large glass elements that can be opened on all four sides of the building, which changes the buildings appearance. The rooms house a small collection of vintage black & white photography by Dick Hoole, legendary surf photographer.

Canal House in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Jeroen de Nijs bni architect – interior

Tuesday, February 11th, 2020

Article source: Jeroen de Nijs bni architect – interior

On one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful canals in the Jordaan, an old deprecated warehouse from the 18th century had already been shut down for many years.

We were asked by the two residents to design a home of allure and equipped with all modern conveniences. The surface area of approximately 50 m2 and 5 floors forced us to think carefully about the location of the functions and the routing through the building. The location of the various stairs was the biggest challenge for us. These are very detailed and positioned that they form a self-evident division of the living functions while maintaining the open character. This results in daylight far into the house. The kitchen is on the first floor where the dining table is in contact with the street and the bloemgracht canal.

Cliff Front 7 in Bali, Indonesia by ALEXIS DORNIER

Tuesday, February 11th, 2020

Article source: ALEXIS DORNIER

As part of the expansion of the Uluwatu Surf Villas, Cliff Front 7 (CARBON HOUSE)  has been designed in collaboration with Tim Russo.

The overall design is a result of applied challenges through plot boundaries amongst the natural landscape. This tropical modern villa consists of 4 bedrooms and maintains a consistent palette of 100-plus year-old reclaimed teak from Java, reclaimed ironwood from Kalimantan, andesite, terrazzo, local limestone, and floor to ceiling windows. The predominant gesture of the house is it’s polygonal shading element, which introduces a transition space, semi-covered and connecting the indoors with the outdoors.  Various folds in the roof give a sense of protection and privacy, and each bedroom bares it’s own signature as a result of the project’s overarching architectural narrative. Cladded with reclaimed teak, the ceiling gives a stark contrast to the lime stone walls that pick up the geometric theme on another scale – a big puzzle of individually cut stone plates that are sourced from a quarry near by.  An expansive garden scape cascades from the angular infinity pool, back dropped by the Indian Ocean. Custom furniture was created to fit into the buildings unique angles. This villa houses a collection of oversized framed art by Andy Davis.

WS house in Canelones, Uruguay by bercetche estudio

Sunday, February 9th, 2020

Article source: bercetche estudio

Located on the outskirts of Montevideo Uruguay, this house designed by “Bercetche Estudio” shows great respect for the environment and, through a nice space distribution, takes advantage of it. Two opaque volumes separated from each other generates a permeable “in between” that gives rise to all the common activities of the house (Hall, living-room, dining-room and kitchen) and connect it with the different boundaries of the land where it was built: to the front a main street of medium traffic, to the right a children’s package, to the left a single-family house and to the bottom a glen with a leafy vegetation. For these different situations the house responds with a particular set of volumes that generates different degrees of privacy. This volumes also contains the garage, laundry and mechanical room. Only the bedrooms has standard windows, with a homogeneous distribution on the facades and aligned each other at the interior, allows a visual communication that crosses all the house.

It is an easy-to-read house, built with sustainable and economical materials, which prove that with well-manipulated basic components, an expressive and energy efficient house can be made.
