Monday, December 2nd, 2019

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

Located on Lize Road in southwest Beijing, the Leeza SOHO tower anchors the new Fengtai business district – a growing financial and transport hub between the city centre and the recently opened Beijing Daxing International Airport to the south. The new business district is integral to Beijing’s multi-modal urban plan to accommodate growth without impacting existing infrastructure networks in the centre of the city.

This 45-storey 172,800m² tower responds to demand from small and medium-sized businesses for flexible and efficient Grade A office space Adjacent to the business district’s rail station at the intersection of five new lines currently under construction on Beijing’s Subway network, Leeza SOHO’s site is diagonally dissected by an underground subway service tunnel.

Identity One in Rennes, France by Jean-Paul VIGUIER et Associés

Monday, December 2nd, 2019

Article source: Jean-Paul VIGUIER et Associés

Initiated in 2008, this city planning project for a new business district aims at reuniting the southside of Rennes with the historical city center. By 2025 the area will total 300 000m² of offices, housing, shops and other services.

As a part of this urban development that includes the transformation of the multimodal hub around the train station, a group of three buildings known as “Identity” emerges on top of the railroad on the Feval block. Jean-Paul Viguier et Associés signs the architecture of one of the buildings, Identity One, and is in charge of the project coordination for the entire area. The architecture firms Architecture Blanchard Marsault Pondevie and Maurer et Gilbert Architectes have respectively designed Identity Two and Three.

Avenida Central Building in Morelia, Mexico by Emilio Alvarez Abouchard Arquitectura

Sunday, December 1st, 2019

Article source: Emilio Alvarez Abouchard Arquitectura

Avenida Central is the most beautiful street in the city not only because of the annual blossoming of its big Jacaranda trees but also because of its avant-garde urbanism. Developed in the late 60’s, Chapultepec Norte neighborhood is located 3km east of downtown Morelia and contrasting with the colonial urbanism and architecture of the historic center, some Modern ideas were stated in this area. However, the uniqueness of this street comes from its wide sidewalks and its thick landscape parkway, two important concepts that slows traffic and create an environment suitable for pedestrians and bicycles.

For us, architecture was an excuse to revalue these urban concepts and include other ideas of the ‘New Urbanism’ through a mixed-use building.

KB house in Cumbayá, Ecuador by TEC Taller EC

Sunday, December 1st, 2019

Article source: TEC Taller EC

The KB is a house of 406m2 located in a residential complex. The project strategy consisted of a rectangular plan closed towards its neighbors, open towards its adjacent lateral façade with the immediate green area and retracted towards its interior through a central core formed by the staircase and a tree that functions as an articulator of the house, the program and the light.

The different programmatic spaces are organized from an orthogonal grid of 9 modules that organize the house with its central module as a non-programmatic space of 3m * 4m which opens to the sky. This space has the will to appear as “open” but contained, has the crucial role of organizing and configuring the house as a central lung that brings together the rigid and flexible spaces in its perimeter, in addition to connect and articulate the house in section.

Long House in Cirencester, England by Bureau de Change architects

Sunday, December 1st, 2019

Article source: Bureau de Change architects

Reinterpreting the rural vernacular, this new home in the Cotswolds uses interlocking barn forms and a palette of local materials.

Taking as a starting point the elongated forms of two 30 metre-long, timber chicken sheds which previously occupied the site, the house is a play of traditional barn volumes which have been pushed and pulled to suit the needs of the client.

Inside, the key living spaces fan out around an internal patio, which acts as a focal point for the home. Clad in copper, the patio is a moment where both nature and light are introduced.

207 housing units in Lyon, France by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX Architectes

Sunday, December 1st, 2019

Article source: PETITDIDIERPRIOUX Architectes

The placement of the project contributes to create a new urban network while interrogating the mutation of the large sites left by the ancient industrial activities. To contribute to the new identity of the neighborhood, we proposed a unitary block, aligned on its 4 sides around an open, airy and diversified central garden.

The project is divided into 4 entities: 3 residential buildings and one office building. On the south-east corner, a 27 units building makes the transition with the office building. The apartments are put away from the noise by a thick facade made of loggias. This building is served by a dual-aspect hall connected to the central garden.

Armadale Residence in Australia by B.E Architecture

Friday, November 29th, 2019

Article source: B.E Architecture

Within the lightly coloured granite structure, the interiors of the Armadale Residence have an unmistakable sense of fun which comes directly from the clients’ personalities. The split-faced granite blocks that the building is made from extend inside the house itself around the doors and windows. The reduced shell of the building is contrasted by the whimsical, colourful character of the house’s interior furnishings.

The main living area has an eclectic mix of furnishings, combining classic designer items, vintage finds and custom made pieces. Each piece has its own history of acquisition or development and construction. Many of the items have strong colour and texture but they sit quite comfortably together and look as if they are part of a collection accumulated over many years. There is a casual, playful theme that runs through the items. This is especially seen in the custom 4m ring light made from hundreds of multicoloured disks and the series of Perspex display boxes which double as a coffee table. They demonstrate personality and craftsmanship but reject a more rigid formality. These items are also inspired from another time. The Perspex materials used are reminiscent of an early 1970’s Modern house.

McDonald Residence in New South Wales, Australia by Jayson Pate Design

Friday, November 29th, 2019

Article source: Jayson Pate Design

Inspired by MK27’s ‘Ipes House’, the design of the Macdonald House aims to adopt modern brutalist properties in a functional and simplistic manner. The design of the Macdonald House evolved in response to creating an open, light filled family home, while maintaining privacy on the exposed, corner site. The aim was to generate an organic and striking figure that utilises materials in their essence without manipulation. The character of the residence is generated by the inclusion of an off-form concrete body that dramatically cantilevers over the underlying living spaces. Concrete is utilised throughout the upper volume, creating the illusion of floating atop the delicate glass form below. Fixed timber-look aluminum batten screens create privacy and shield the four upper level bedrooms from the northern sunlight that fills the living spaces below. The thin battens simultaneously serve to soften the robust concrete texture and generate neat lines to extenuate the height of the structure. Feature stone blade walls enhance the privacy of the internal living space that seamlessly connect to the external alfresco. The light-filled living areas are accompanied by a linear pool that elongates the landscape. The landscaping was kept to an understated palette with small ground coverings, to then exaggerated by a mature dragon tree at the corner of the site.
