With its genesis on a preexisting ruin of a single storey house built in local basalt stone masonry, Casa Atlântico put forward its transformation. The existing walls were, thus, the anchor point of the intervention, now converted into an exterior patio, a negative space within the new construction. The objective is now to occupy two levels of dwelling space, where a main house and two independent studios are layout, all benefiting with privileged views facing west towards the ocean, and to the surrounding natural and rural scenery. The Mountain House in Oberschlierbach, Austria by Sigurd Larsen Design & Architecture

Monday, November 25th, 2019

Article source: Sigurd Larsen Design & Architecture

Full access to the green meadows from the living areas and framed views of the snowy Alps has formed The Mountain House in Austria.

The element of a wooden bench in the kitchen (Eckbank) is an essential part of an Austrian home. In this house the bench is located at the key point where the house meets the green sloping hills. Together with a staircase, this element forms the heart of the house and highlights the special feature of the unique landscape. The only terrace is located at the end of the narrow house on top of an existing small foundation. The rest of the glass façade allows direct access between the common areas and the green meadows.

House in a park in Zürich, Switzerland by Think Architecture AG

Monday, November 25th, 2019

Article source: Think Architecture AG

This park-like plot comprises a collection of single-story, freely arranged spaces. The individual structures are held together by a continuous roof edge, which creates a transition with the undulating roof landscape. The volumes take their inspiration and height from the natural contours of the area and integrate themselves harmoniously into the verdant environment. This basic meandering shape disguises the actual size of the house, and its projections and recesses allow it to merge with the landscape of the surrounding parkland. All rooms have direct garden access and, depending on their aspect, attractive views of the park towards the mountain panorama or down towards the Lake Zurich basin. At the center of the floor plan lies an atrium that provides attractive lighting and brings living nature into the heart of the house. The basement is completely below ground and is only visible near the existing supporting wall.

Cremorne Duplex in Australia by Hebden Architects

Monday, November 25th, 2019

Article source: Hebden Architects

This duplex was completed in July 2019 but, the story started when we were approached by a couple of “Mum and dad” investors who had acquired the site to build a home for themselves and another to rent or sell, with the possibility of selling both. They described themselves as “nearly-empty nesters looking to downsize” and wanted to develop for that market. The site was on a corner and at 552 sqm, not large. It was constrained by a sandstone retaining wall on one street frontage and a small landscaped road reserve at the end of the other street, forming a view corridor for surrounding properties. The area had been steep, rocky terrain until around the 1930’s to 40’s with much of the housing of that era still intact, the existing duplex on there being typical. The rear of the site had an easement for power lines and a large native tree which had to be retained. The property beyond was a three story dwelling with multiple windows.

Red Note House on the Horizon in An Ji City, China by LI WENXI Architects

Sunday, November 24th, 2019

Article source: LI WENXI Architects

Shanchuan Township, surrounded by mountains, which is located at the southernmost tip of Anji County, Hangzhou City, China. We designed a police room at the entrance of the local central elementary school and served as the entrance node to its hot spring resort.

Architecture is a special kind of living body. When it begins to talk to the horizon, it will gain a transcendental power. This power creates an atmosphere that is intoxicating. This time we hope to use a small building to deeply embed a high pitch in the earth movement.
