Chamfer House in New South Wales, Australia by Stukel Architecture

Sunday, June 26th, 2022

Article source: Stukel Architecture

“Chamfer house stealthily integrates a first-floor addition to an existing federation style semi-detached dwelling located in Sydney’s inner-west. The ‘chamfer’ was inspired by the 45deg geometry of the existing tiled roof and allows the building to minimise its presence to the streetscape whilst maximising its orientation to take advantage of summer and winter sun angles. On the lower level, the ‘pop-up’ window over the kitchen and dining zones cleverly frames a view to a mature and very present tree canopy in the rear courtyard. A double height void serves as a central internal connecting device, providing much needed light to the living, kitchen and dining zones below.

Selva Alegre Residence in Los Chillos, Ecuador by Leppanen + Anker architects

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022

Article source: Leppanen + Anker architects

Selva Alegre was created to take inspiration from the surrounding environment, the Andes Mountains in Ecuador. This wooden house is located away from the city, in an open landscape ideal for a retreat space. The idea was to make a house that would be unified conceptually and visually with the surrounding natural scenery. The dwelling sits at one end of the lot, near the edge of a creek, allowing uninterrupted visuals throughout the project. The strategy was to leave the ground floor as open as possible and the programmatic divisions clear, so that the design resembles that of a typical “hacienda house” but with a modern twist. We wanted to reinvent the user experience of these centuries old weekend escapes, a typology that has historically dominated the mountainous landscapes from Colombia to Peru. Our concept was to return to the roots of the hacienda in terms of form and material. Bring back the use of wood, stone and clay but with a contemporary mindset, one that felt light and airy. This strategy resulted conceptually in a continuous wavy blanket which gently protects the program below it.

THE HILLS in Guayaquil, Ecuador by MVRDV

Thursday, June 16th, 2022

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV has revealed the design for The Hills, the firm’s first project in South America. Designed for Quito-based developer Uribe Schwarzkopf, the project is located on the Guayas riverfront in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Comprising six residential towers atop a mixed-use plinth that creates a lively, landscaped “valley” on its roof, the design is inspired by the many juxtapositions found in Guayaquil itself – from the broad expanse of the river contrasted with nearby mountains, to the sight of modern high-rises on the shoreline set against the colourful hillside settlements of the Santa Ana hill.

EQUADOR 804 Apartment in Cascais, Portugal by DC.AD, Duarte Caldas

Thursday, June 16th, 2022

Article source: DC.AD, Duarte Caldas

Equador 804 Apartment is a renovation project located in Cascais, covering approximately 33m2, aimed at income generation through short-term rental.

The proposed functional program included a kitchen and a bedroom, in open-space format, a bathroom, and also the use of the outdoor balcony as a living space. As this is a relatively small area, the first step of the intervention involved in the elimination of all non-structural elements and walls, except those configuring the existing kitchen and bathroom, releasing the entire spaciousness of the apartment.

The house is located on the second floor of a building built in 1950 in the Eixample’s Nova Esquerra neighbourhood, Barcelona. The building has 4 doors per landing and is used for discounted middle-class housing, as described by the architect F.J. Barba Corsini in the report of the municipal works file.

The structure of the house is made of load-bearing walls, with 6 openings parallel to the street, including the 4 façades: the two main ones and the two belonging to the interior courtyards. The floors are divided into 2 by the central load-bearing wall, which is joined by a small installation. The house is accessed from one end and its main façade overlooks the inner courtyard of the block. It consists of a living-dining room, a kitchen, two bedrooms and a restroom, in a conventional and crushed space. The total area is 47.59 m2.
