New Glass-Fronted Building Provides Learning and Diagnostic Spaces

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA—The Education Resource Center (ERC), designed by Los Angeles-based CO Architects, is now under construction to fill a gap within the University of Virginia’s medical campus in Charlottesville. The four-level, 46,000-square-foot facility is being built for the University of Virginia Health System on a tight site between the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and a hospital parking garage. The new building is located across the street from the front entrance of the University of Virginia Medical Center and railroad tracks at the rear.

Social and ethical responsibility

Our responsibility goes beyond offering just a living space. We give examples of certain elements like water and how it can be captured, treated and reused. Our building offers less consumption of energy through passive ventilation and naturally illuminated spaces. We created a habitat for migrating species, offered spaces for growing your own food. We are enhancing life quality and education on an urban context through our proposal just by a deep understanding of it’s social and ecological history.

(This is an update to the previously published article for Pharrell Williams Resource Center)

After meeting at Art Basel in 2008, Pharrell Williams and Chad Oppenheim quickly realized they had a shared vision to make the world a better place. What resulted was an inspired youth center in Pharrell’s hometown of Virginia Beach. The Pharrell Williams Resource Center (working name) will not only become a place for kids to escape and imagine, but will set a new standard for the way the world builds for its future.
