Article source: Sudhakar Pai Associates

Sattva Galleria is located on Bellary Road, which leads on to the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore,India. The Office cum Retail (ORC) building is equidistant from the city center and the airport. The building programme was aimed at mixed-use format, allowing for quality retail on the lower floors and office spaces on the upper floors.

Design on the project started in 2009. At the crux of all design ideas was creation of a simple, functional and responsive building that was not only efficient and sensitive to its surroundings, but also a piece of iconic architecture that reflected the city in spirit.

Tudor House Liquor Store in Esquimalt, Canada by GBL Architects

Friday, December 6th, 2019

Article source: GBL Architects

Liquor stores are ubiquitous in their urban presence, often muted in their expression, and relentlessly generic in their architectural design. Function dictates form, resulting in characterless boxes that contribute little to the eclectic vitality of high street commercial frontages. Our client encouraged us to challenge the pre-conceived ideas of this retail design typology, to develop a unique building form that would function independently as a successful retail space in a neighbourhood that has been devoid of significant commercial growth in recent years.

Located on Lize Road in southwest Beijing, the Leeza SOHO tower anchors the new Fengtai business district – a growing financial and transport hub between the city centre and the recently opened Beijing Daxing International Airport to the south. Article source: GBL Architects

Strathcona Village is a mixed-use industrial and residential development that occupies an entire city block on East Hastings Street in Strathcona, one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. The $112M mixed-use development, the first of its kind in North America, opened in July 2018 on time and on budget. The 300,000 square foot building accommodates market housing with much-needed affordable housing and job spaces for light industry.

The development stands as a model of revitalization without displacement in a neighbourhood that strives for meaningful development policies that enable economic inclusion coupled with safe and adequate housing. This model for mixed-use projects that retain light industrial businesses is scalable to other urban centres across the country.

Monday, November 11th, 2019

Article source: OMA

OMA / Ellen van Loon and Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli will design the new KaDeWe department store and hotel in Vienna’s Museumsquartier. This was announced after a final jury meeting on October 1, concluding a design competition organized by the developer Signa.

Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli and Ellen van Loon: “The value of department stores should be measured by their ability to engage the local context. We are very excited about the opportunity to work in the historical heart of Vienna, and with this project we intend to highlight its qualities. The building is not an icon but rather an architectural device that establishes new urban connections and public spaces through its own internal organisation.”

The Cultural Block in Paris, France by TOLILA+GILLILAND & TVK

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

Article source: TOLILA+GILLILAND & TVK

Seven-theater cinema with cultural space, community center with concert space and dance studios, 342 residential units, a shared garden, bespoke artwork, and retail space Three residential buildings offering exceptional views of the great Parisian landscape anchor three corners of a mixed-use block. At the heart of the project is a cultural center for the new ZAC Clichy-Batignolles district in Paris’ 17th arrondissement: a seven-theatre cinema and a community center. These public volumes, anchored to the ground, give way to the public realm and are crowned with hanging gardens. Three residential blocks emerge from this base, climbing up to 50 meters. This simple distribution of masses effectively resolves the inscription of a complex program on a high-density site. Thickened facades permit a band of generous loggias around the residential blocks. Architectural precast concrete on the buildings’ facades situate the project within the material tradition of Parisian stone and concrete and gives each of the three buildings a singular expression from the ground to the sky: the twisted form with its torqued effect (sand colored), the chiseled bar with continuous balconies (in white) and the pleated tower with its progressive fold (in white).

121 East 22nd Street in New York by OMA

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

Article source: OMA

121 East 22nd is OMA’s first ground up building and residential complex in Manhattan. The design was conceived from its site which straddles two separate and different neighborhoods: a quiet residential area surrounding Gramercy Park, an enclosed and private garden, and the bustling commercial space around Madison Square Park, a public park that hosts an array of activities.

The L-shaped site posed an opportunity to be informed by the two neighborhoods while activating three street fronts. The concept emerges from this dualistic condition, referencing Cubist artwork, in which objects are viewed from a multitude of viewpoints rather than a single one to represent the subject in a greater context. As such, the North Tower conveys the meeting of the two neighborhoods, realized through two interlocking planes that come together at 23rd and Lexington to form a distinct, three-dimensional corner.
