Vol Walker Hall & the Steven L. Anderson Design Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas by MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS

Monday, March 12th, 2018

Article source: MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS

The Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas is a striking hybrid of a beautifully restored and renovated historical building, Vol Walker Hall (65,000 SF), and a contemporary insertion and addition, the Steven L. Anderson Design Center (37,000 SF). The coupling of old and new invigorates the historical center of the campus and revitalizes the educational environment of Vol Walker Hall, the campus’s original library and home to the School of Architecture since 1968. The expanded facility unites all three departments – architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design – under one roof for the first time, reinforcing the School’s identity and creating a cross-disciplinary, collaborative learning environment.

Article source: Robert Hull and UNIVERSITY of WASHINGTON

Located in the center Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan’s fourth largest city, the Gohar Khatoon Girls’ School provides kindergarten through grade twelve classes, serving 3,000 students a day.

Mazar-i-Sharif is home to several universities, and Gohar Khatoon–acting as a gateway to higher education–is positioned to become a key institution for educating several thousand women and girls in an important urban center. Girls’ schools are already considered to be major contributors in Afghanistan’s push toward development and these institutions serve as powerful mechanisms for inclusion within Afghan society. Schools are the setting where women and girls will negotiate this transition, and Gohar Khatoon has been designed to support this process by promoting stability, comfort, and community engagement.

Escola Britânica de Artes Criativas in São Paulo, Brazil by FORM bureau

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Article source: FORM bureau

The Escola Britânica de Artes Criativas is located within a building designed by Isay Weinfeld in the bohemian district of Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo.

The main idea was to create a school with a community spirit, a space which the students would consider their own and be inspired to create in. We wanted to surprise them, to immerse them in an interesting environment, but to leave some spaces as a blank canvas.

McEwen School of Architecture in Sudbury, Canada by LGA Architectural Partners

Sunday, February 25th, 2018

Article source: LGA Architectural Partners

LGA Architectural Partners designed Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture to prepare young architects for the critical design issues of the 21st Century. McEwen is not your typical architecture school – its curriculum emphasizes architecture and fabrication techniques focused on the traditional and evolving aspects of life in the north, including Indigenous culture, wood construction, local ecologies and resources, and design for the impact of climate change.

Guided by Ted Kesik, LGA collaborated with many stakeholders to develop a “Sustainability Design Manifesto” to address the conditions of the northern environment and ensure that the school is highly sustainable, going well beyond LEED. For example, the new building was massed and oriented to optimize heating, cooling and natural ventilation to conserve energy and minimize reliance on the mechanical system.
