Central School in Fontaines-sur-Saône, France by Atelier Didier Dalmas

Tuesday, November 29th, 2016

Article source: Atelier Didier Dalmas

Built on a area of 7962 square meters with strong slope, the school complex of Fontaines-sur-Saône knew how to take advantage of the site by fitting into the slope, offering school playgrounds to the South and assuring comfortable connections with urban public space.

The entrance of the establishment is designed by the joint between the two esplanades (top and bottom), underlined by low walls of retraining structure accompanying a generous staircase of main access. An elevator and a banister assisted the entrance.

AOIZ Nedim Uysal Technical High School in İzmir, Turkey by M artı D Mimarlık

NEW GENERATION EDUCATION “ FACTORY” – SOCIABILITY GENERATING NICHES

Technical and Industrial High School building is located on one of typical parcels of grid-planned İzmir Atatürk Organised Industrial Zone.  Rectangular, introverted boxes placed on rectangular parcels define settlement characteristic of organised industrial zone. Monotonuos character on third dimension is the result of introverted and uniform settlement of buildings located on a flat terrain. This industrial layout  provides an introverted and an isolated life. Modern education vision requires interactive and motivating interior spaces. However, social and dynamic experience can’t be provided in this zone.

Hakusui Nursery School in Chiba, Japan by Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop

Sunday, November 13th, 2016

Article source: Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop

This nursery school in Sakura, Chiba was planned to accommodate 60 pupils.

Seiyu-Kai, a local social welfare firm specializing in elderly care facilities approached us for this project. The overarching concept for this plan started with an idea: “a nursery school is a large house.”

Surrounded by mountains and forest, the southern area of the site rests on a gentle slope. Putting this topography to use, we designed the school room to resemble a large set of stairs.

Pierced Box, Cerrillo De Maracena School in Granada, Spain by Elisavalero Arquitectura

Friday, November 11th, 2016

Article source: Elisavalero Arquitectura

Cerrillo de Maracenas School is a 50-year-old parish school situated in a low-income outlying area of Granada, with nearly 250 students under 12.

The building was in need of a new flexible multipurpose space, and a second stairway for security reasons. Valero built a new space, linking with the existing building, to become the new west façade.

Primary School Doren A in Austria by Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten ZT GmbH

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

Article source: Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten ZT GmbH

Doren’s primary school is located on a steep slope in the centre of the village, alongside the church, rectory and town hall. The building also houses a sports hall and preschool. The five storey concrete building explores themes of rotation and the overlaying of multiple layers in horizontal and vertical. A spatial game is created by the shifting orientations as one moves from layer to layer and floor to floor. The external layer of the walls acts structurally, complemented by floor-to-ceiling beams spanning within the building’s depth. One large opening in each beam allows horizontal circulation from layer to layer. The concrete primary structure is legible and tangible from both inside and outside the school building. All non-structural elements are finished in untreated, native Silver Fir. The timber has been worked differently depending on its purpose: the walls planed smooth, the floors finely sawn. The palette for the new school has been distilled to two materials, one structural and one non-structural: concrete and timber. The new public square in front of the school serves both as a playground during breaks and the centre of social and civic life in the village.

The 4th Gymnasium in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Paul de Ruiter Architects

Tuesday, November 1st, 2016

Article source: Paul de Ruiter Architects

In the first energy-neutral district of Amsterdam, the Houthavens, we designed the 4th Gymnasium. An energy-neutral secondary school that accommodates about 800 students. The school functions as the entrance of the new district. The Houthavens had an industrial role for years and will transform into a vibrant district with several islands in the upcoming years. A great variety of buildings and residents will take their place here. The 4th Gymnasium serves as a herald for the further developments of this area.

GD Goenka in New Delhi, India by Design Forum International

Wednesday, October 5th, 2016

Article source: Epistle Communications

Educational Institutions across the globe are designed to facilitate the engagement of the young minds by creating interactive environments that are a blend of study, activity and play areas. In alignment with the same ethos, the GD Goenka group’s philosophy is to reinvent the school experience by creating the best physical infrastructure as per global standards, coupled with high quality, well-paidand motivated faculty. A simple and concise design brief was determined- to have class rooms that are equipped with the neoteric style of teaching and content. Unlike the use of traditional systems such as blackboards etc., novel educations tools take precedent in the contemporary education system; multimedia tools such as projectors, and adequate storage space for children to stack their bags, books, classrooms that are highly flexible to support a variety of formal and informal teaching methods etc. The design of the institutional development of a primary school (from kindergarten to class 5) enables these requirements while aiming to provide flexibility of spaces by making the building form itself as a part of the learning experience.

Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa, California by WRNS Studio

Tuesday, October 4th, 2016

Article source: WRNS Studio

Last month, Sonoma Academy, an independent college prep high school located in Sonoma County, broke ground on a 22,000-square-foot expansion project, designed by San Francisco-based architecture and planning firm WRNS Studio. Situated on a 34-acre campus nestled at the base of Taylor Mountain, this marks the first phase of a two-phase campus-wide transformation. Known as the Grange & Studios, the two-level educational facility will add key academic, social and cultural spaces that will support the overall mission of the school. In less than 14 months, the project went from design phase to beginning construction.
