BAEGOT MIDDLE SCHOOL in South Korea by Daniel Valle Architects

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016

Article source: Daniel Valle Architects

South Korean schools are commonly oppressive buildings resembling a military pavilion more than an educational building. They are symmetrical, repetitive, dull and very tall. The organization of the various school buildings and their open spaces is replicated over and over with very few possible variations. Overall, schools lack emotion and warmth.

Much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl was the inspiration for a new dining hall and after school facility in Buckinghamshire’s Prestwood Infant School. The author – who lived locally – had already apparently based the headteacher Miss Trunchbull in his popular book Matilda on a former real-life headteacher at the school.

Clermont-Ferrand School of architecture in France by du Besset-Lyon architectes urbanistes

Thursday, December 24th, 2015

Article source: AHA

The task was to transform a sanatorium, built in 1930’s, into a School of Architecture. The Sanatorium is a perfect example of functional architecture, and it has to change radically its function. In order to preserve the rational spirit of the existing building and to create a model of a coherent architecture for the future students, our project becomes a pure reconversion: we restated the main architectural concept of the Sanatorium.

Geography as origin

The preschool is built on the urban limit of Haro. A place without buildings, marked with road lines, announces its immediate apparition. The strong slope delineates and discovers for us the possibility of an architecture of a geographic origin.

Bronze tightrope walker… welcomes Park Extension schoolchildren in Montréal, Canada by NFOE etassociésarchitectes

Saturday, November 28th, 2015

Article source: v2com

Montreal grew rapidly during the first half of the 20th century and keeping pace was the construction of neighbourhood schools, often designed by well-known architects of the time. A decade ago, a major revamping program was launched by the Montreal School Board (CSDM) to deal with the serious need of upgrading their building stock. One of the first schools targeted for upgrade and expansion was Barclay School, designed in 1930 by Gordon and Thompson.
