The Dutch foundation for protestant-christian primary and remedial education (Protestants-Christelijk Basis- en Orthopedagogisch Onderwijs), the Zalmplaat school and the city of Rotterdam have challenged the building industry to present a new Zalmplaat school that is as sustainable and easily maintainable as possible.
The new school consists of a school building of ca 6500m², a sports-block of ca 2500m² as well as additional smaller buildings. The school is executed as a passive-house, thus becoming one of the largest passive-house buildings in Sweden and probably the largest passive-house school built in the country.
In the open plain near the Malian village Gangouroubouro LEVS designed a new primary school. The architecture of the school reflects a connection to the local building traditions, culture and function. Compared with the rich architectural areas near the rocky walls in the Dogon area, particularly at this location the plain offers the possibility of a different architectural appearance.

Kahurangi School is the latest new school in the Wellington region. Kahurangi School, meaning “prized” or “precious” opened in September 2013, merging two existing schools, Strathmore Community School and Miramar South School. The design creates a new beginning, with buildings that provide a strong sense of its identity, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of its community and with Pasifika/Maori in particular.
The new building for the Montessori School Waalsdorp makes up part of the “school triangle” in the city’s Benoordenhout district. Designed by De ZwarteHond, the school blends in well with the neighbourhood, while maintaining a unique presence. Its spacious and flexible interior forms a dynamic accommodation perfectly suited to the Montessori education system.
HEADLINE: From a previously unseen building to a fun, colourful and vibrant part of the community.
S&T has worked with the staff and key stakeholders at Kereru Park Campus in South Auckland to give their school a fresh presence from the street with a new administration and library building. The previous buildings were hidden; almost unseen from the road and plagued by weather tightness issues.
The building designed as the new school building for the Toshin Satellite Preparatory School is a rental property in an area with a high concentration of girls’ schools, with our client, Matsuo Gakuin, occupying the building as a tenant. The building in question faces a bustling shopping street which also serves as a busy school route for students. The exterior of the building facing the shopping district is made entirely of glass. It was anticipated that the impression created by the interior design of the building, visible to students passing by the glass exterior, would have a positive impact on increasing student enrollment numbers.

Complete renovation, wooden structural extensions on brick ensemble, green roofs to harvest rainwater, windmills and solar chimneys to light and provide natural ventilation. Classrooms are upstairs; the architecture brings in natural light, allowing for use of underground levels (-5 m) of the old building. How? A long north-south grassy gardened trough at the base of the courtyard, bordered by a glass passageway connecting reception on the ground floor to the life of the school and the library below. An extensive wooden structure shelters the reception area, covered playground, and gallery. At the north end, staff housing is placed on this wooden structure, above the top of the original building.
