History of Science Centre in Halban, Oman by Hoehler + alSalmy

Monday, September 3rd, 2018

Article source: Hoehler + alSalmy

The History of Science Centre acts as a mediator bringing past Islamic sciences of the \”golden age\” in relation to the current university studies at the German University of Technology (GUtech) in Halban, Oman. The building aims to create a link between art and science with nature and geometry whilst symbolizing infinity and divinity.

Numerous innovative techniques were used to deliver the successful design of the project. The building is divided into two sections; the external geometrical standalone concrete shell enveloping the inner building.

Programmed, designed, and constructed in only 27-months, the 245,000-square-foot, $99-million laboratory complex allows University of Arizona research scientists to collaborate with local healthcare providers and private companies to find new medical cures and treatments.

“We will pursue expanded partnerships with industry that we hope will lead to groundbreaking discoveries,” said University of Arizona President Ann Weaver Hart at the building’s dedication ceremony. “This building will allow us to further these efforts, and, ultimately, improve lives.”

Museum of Life and Science in Durham, North Carolina by in situ studio

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

Article source: in situ studio

The woodland classroom building is located in a forest on the south side of the Museum’s campus. The building is a flexible space for science learning that blends indoor space with the surrounding natural environment. The stand-alone restroom building is located on the north side of the Museum’s campus, within a new outdoor exhibition area called Hideaway Woods, just up the trail from a Patrick Dougherty sculpture. We worked with the Museum of Life and Science to master plan these portions of their expanding campus and locate these small structures to minimize disturbance to the surrounding environs and, in the case of the woodland classroom, maximize connections with the natural environment.

The Maersk Tower is a state-of-the-art research building whose innovative architecture creates the optimum framework for world-class health research, making it a landmark in Copenhagen. It aims to contribute positively by linking the University of Copenhagen with the surrounding neighbourhoods and wider city.

The Tower is an extension of Panum, the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, and contains both research and teaching facilities, as well as a conference centre with auditoriums and meeting rooms, connected to the latest technology. With its easily identifiable and dynamically curved shape, the 15 storey research tower stands as a sculptural linchpin for the University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, whilst equally forming a visible link between the city and the North Campus.
