Chongwenmen M-Cube in Beijing, China by MVRDV

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

Article source: MVRDV

Located just within Beijing’s innermost ring road, the KWG·M·CUBE is prominently located next to the Beijing Railway Station and near to both the Temple of Heaven to the Southwest, and Tiananmen and the Forbidden City to the Northwest. Given this prime location and the consequent value of the land, the client wanted a building that would stand out from its mostly beige and grey neighbours, while also packing a large amount of space into a relatively small footprint. Contradicting this request were the desires of the city government, whose preference was for a building that would fit in with its muted surroundings on the busy street.

Farmers Park is a mixed-use development for active, healthy, and engaged families and businesses in the Ozarks region. It is anchored by the Farmers Market of the Ozarks, a venue for organic and locally grown food that attracts over 5,000 visitors a week. Ground-level amenities include restaurants, shopping, community gardens and a micro-orchard. An office component was designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification and serve as a template for sustainability in the region. The strategy of Farmers Park is simple: encourage pedestrian activity and community interaction. The activity at the street level makes the development safe, vibrant, and economically viable.

Lyon Part-Dieu in France by MVRDV

Friday, May 4th, 2018

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV’s design focusses on integrating the Lyon Part-Dieu shopping complex to its surrounding urban fabric and hopes to allow everyday life to permeate through it. The street is not only extended through the building via an East-West walkway but also over it by stairways and escalators that take users up and over the complex. MVRDV pushed to reconnect the shopping centre with the facilities in its immediate context. A rearrangement of terraces on the south façade provides a direct connection with the library, and the restructured main east entrance provides access to visitors arriving from the Part-Dieu train station; which is also due to be renovated. The public realm on the street level will extend onto the shopping centre itself, and by rearranging the rooftop, technical facilities and carparks. MVRDV created a series of large terraces and green spaces that are accessible directly from the street. Restaurants, bars and cinemas all spill out onto the terraces but are also independently accessed through covered escalators that navigate around and over the building.
