De Karel Doorman in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Ibelings van Tilburg Architecten

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Article source: De Karel Doorman

De Karel Doorman consists of the renovation of a shopping building: Ter Meulen and an added residential building. Restoration and new-build The new residential building is up to 70 metres in height and includes 114 apartments. It is built on top of the Ter
Meulen building in Rotterdam. This is an unusual project as the new building literally rests on the columns and foundations of the existing structure. The only additions are a pair of concrete lift shafts which also provide stability. The construction technique is unconventional for a project in the Netherlands, as the main structure is in steel instead of heavy stone-like materials as concrete and limestone.

Originally standing on the Barcelona road, now the C-245, running parallel to the coastline and communicating the towns on the left of the Llobregat delta with those along its edge, it followed a linear development until the 1950s, with the aim of connecting the town centre with those of nearby towns along the C-245.

Mercator Center Maribor in Slovenia by Studio Kalamar

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Article source: Studio Kalamar

Mercator Centre Maribor is located in a densely populated part of Maribor, which distinguishes it from typical suburban retail centres. The large centre is therefore more open, has several entrances, oriented not only to visitors who come by car but also to pedestrians. Entrances are typologically accentuated and stand out from the neutral sheath. They lead into interior malls and squares, creating an urban experience of a real city. With the uncontrolled versatility of visual impulses from the shops left and right we devoted our attention to design of the floor and ceiling, which bring some architectural articulation into the diversified space. The floor is defined by sand-coloured ceramics with a diagonal darker path leading from one side to the other and back.

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Article source: LOVE architecture and urbanism ZT GmbH

The design concept for the renovation of the interior of the department store followed one main principle: the central atrium should become the store’s new nucleus and the central orientation point of the building because this is where the horizontal and vertical visual axes and the main building access are united.

Wintergarden Facade in Brisbane, Australia by Studio 505

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

Article source: Studio 505

“The Wintergarden Façade is a radically experiential composition, a complex and beautiful study of nature, geometry and layering that communicates the rich diversity of life”

The brief for the new facades to the three street frontages of the Wintergarden Shopping Centre in central Brisbane required the creative application of a coherent identity and architecturally holistic sensibility in order to realise a multitude of intentions – to create an entertaining and engaging retail experience, a lifestyle destination and a ‘must-go-to’ meeting place and thoroughfare – at the heart of Brisbane’s city centre.
