Graz central station, with 30,000 travelers per day, is one of the most important transport hubs in Austria. The increasing importance of the transport hub in the future requires adaption of the complex at the train station as well as the connections to public transport within the city of Graz
Kengo Kuma & Associates won the first prize for the competition “Saint-Denis Pleyel Emblematic Train Station” in Saint-Denis, France.
The train station will be the first stone of a future global urban project in the site of Saint-Denis Pleyel. It will enable the site and the city to increase its metropolitan scale significantly. The project is designed as a unique opportunity to open up the district by connecting the two sides of the city over a huge railway network of the Parisian North station. The station becomes an extension of the public spaces on many levels. Multiple levels continue in spiral, so the station functions as a complex that brings in streets in vertical layer. Steel frames that evoke rail tracks are used in the curtain wall and many other parts of the structure, to emphasize the passage of time and history. This approach will make people be aware that the station is theirs and give them pleasant passing-by every day, connected with the network of the city.
This is a building for Maritime Station in the port of Baiona, for lines of passenger ships operating in this area of Rias Baixas, located on a dam in the center of the port, between the village and sea. It is a construction that protects, that wrap, but allowing the user direct relationship with the outside without isolation of a privileged environment. The building is treated as a longitudinal street that runs through the entire building and their main entrances on the headwalls, but accessible by several points, allowing the user to move freely, at all time, and allowing a clear view of the berthing areas. The wood box, works as a large lattice and sun protection of the building, so allows a nice integration with the environment in which it is situated, setting up part of the landscape from a distance, on the approach from the sea.
OVA Studio entered this open competition for the design of station 20 of Sofia new underground system.
Our design option proposed to escape from the tunnel like feeling of many underground stations by providing a vortex mesh vault that acted as both a structural element but also as signalization and information display. one of the challenges was to bring light from the street down to the concourse and ultimately to the platform levels.

Spatial organization
The mixed-use complex that was the object of the competition was clearly divided on 4 spatial-functional units: A) North (Bus station), B) South (Hotel-Office-Commercial spaces), C) future metro station and D) Railway station. Introversion was the main organizational principle that was used in conceptualization of the complex due to the lack of adequate views and spatial markers towards which the complex could open up to. Proximity of busy transport hubs (Bus station, Railway station and the Inner city ringroad) which go through the location aspire positioning the main content around inner spatial motives (atrium gardens), distant from unsuitable surrounding.

As the central public transport hub for the entire region, the train station in Aarau serves as a point of departure, arrival and transfer for more than 40,000 train and bus travelers every day. Due to assorted small structures, street furniture, art objects and planters that had gathered over time, the station forecourt was barely still perceived as a public open space. Bahnhofstrasse, the street leading to the train station, was a spatially defining axis dominated by car traffic, thus cutting the space off from the surroundings. That is why a new station forecourt with a bus terminal and optimized public access was also envisaged along with construction of the new train station. After lengthy preparatory work in close dialogue with various interest groups, the Aarau populace approved the project with an overwhelming majority in 2009.
