Article source: Henrique Barros-Gomes

With a contemporary and minimalist approach, this exposed concrete weekend house is to be located in a rural area in upstate Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo, Portugal.

The site is a clearing with dense wooded surroundings. The house has large glazed surfaces, increasing the interior exterior relation. Wooden sliding louvres, recessed in the walls, provide shade from the sun and protection from intruders. Roof slabs extend to the exterior, shading the glazed panels.

Rose Library in Norman, Oklahoma by John Postic

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Article source: John Postic

Libraries today serve as gathering places, community centers, and cafes. We need to stop viewing libraries as sacred temples of reading and research and more as a collective gathering place of people, ideas, events, and resources; a place that incites imagination and satisfies curiosity – a veritable flowering of culture. With a form that evokes the Oklahoma Rose, this library has a multi-layered skin that passively filters light, sound, and visitors to the library. These ‘petals’ diffuse the light entering the library, reducing solar heat gain and providing excellent reading light.

Portico in Tokyo, Japan

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Article source: Aida Atelier, Inc.

This is a house for a family of three in a residential neighborhood of suburban Tokyo. Surrounded by properties subdivided through generations of time, this site maintains its original state. Albeit having plenty of land relative to others, six different adjacent properties with homes built tightly to the boundary leaves the project site with a condition, which limits the project from fully enjoying the advantage of having a deep street frontage with the river. Such meticulous condition of uneven contextual grain at a time of transition from continuing growth and expansion, it shall undoubtedly be emerged in mass in the residential neighborhood. As such, the theme for this project is the approach to architecture and exterior space that receives undulating peripheral density.
