The project site is located in the Izumo Plain made of sands carried by the Hii River, leading to Lake Shinji, and the Kobe River, leading to the Sea of Japan, in Izumo City of Shimane prefecture. It is known as a rice‐producing district in Shimane prefecture characterized by its Tsujimatsu windbreak forests, where open plains are uncommon. Lee Boyd has recently collaborated on the exciting new visitor centre for Beefeater Gin at their distillery in central London which now provides visitors an insight into the history of gin and an understanding of the process of gin making. A bold new extension providing a point of entry to the centre, links the different parts of the distillery and allows visitors to move from the exhibition floor to the stills house without interrupting the day to day workings at Beefeater. Beefeater Gin is the world’s number one premium gin and has been made in the heart of London for over 150 years, the only international brand to have its distillery in the capital. Beefeater is uniquely placed to call itself the Home of Gin and tell the intriguing story of the entwined history of London and Gin.

Funding
RCKa played a key role in the genesis of the project, having identified the full extent of local authority site ownership and the opportunity to replace a structurally unsound facility with one wholly aligned with emerging youth provision policy.
The practice also identified the capital funding stream (having worked on the part-funded OPEN youth venue in Norwich), and were instrumental in the preparation of a funding bid to the government’s MyPlace scheme, which was subsequently selected from over 240 competing bids.

The client wanted a consultancy space at home. The farmhouse itself is a typical courtyard farm. In order to protect privacy, and also to avoid creating a door in the rather blank outer walls, we opted for a brick gate, behind which a contemporary framework was constructed internally.
