Avinguda Catalunya 11 in Spain by FITA Architecture Works

Wednesday, September 12th, 2018

Article source: FITA Architecture Works

Avinguda Catalunya 11 is a residential project (ten apartment units and two commercial spaces) located in the historic district of Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona. The client’s aim was to transform the house where she was born into a building that while contemplating its valuable context, suggested a refreshing proposal.

The composition of the façade interprets the proportions and rhythm of the landmarked buildings. The decision to emphasize the corner and the cornice derives from studying the old buildings’ tectonic and the divorce between the structural elements’ function and their architectural expression, which took place in the 20th century, eliminating the definition of the corner.

Hapjeong 359-18 in Seoul, South Korea by Simplex Architecture

Friday, August 31st, 2018

Article source: Simplex Architecture

Mapo-gu, Hapjeong-dong is undergoing many changes. Dangin-ri Power Plant, the first thermal power plant in Korea, has been responsible for supplying power to the city for more than 80 years. In the 2000s, due to the aging of the generator and to enhance the cityscape of Seoul, the city decided to underground the power plant and create a park above. Due to these changes, the area near the Dangin-ri power plant gradually underwent the process of gentrification, and many of the residential buildings in this area, which had low land prices, have been transformed into commercial spaces.

Swan Café in Cape Town, South Africa by Haldane Martin Iconic Design

Monday, July 30th, 2018

Article source: Haldane Martin Iconic Design

Haldane Martin has designed a new café for Cape Town: a traditional French crêperie called Swan Café, nestled in the hub of the bustling east city precinct. Elegant, feminine and atmospheric, the café brings to life the charm of Paris in a space that’s completely unique to the Mother City.

The blue swan logo at the core of the graphic identity is also the central interior design concept. Owner Jessica Rushmere has always identified with the swan. A graceful and majestic creature with mythological significance, these attributes play into the brand identity and the interior design, using the swan as an emblem and feminine oval shapes throughout.

Neil Tomlinson Architects has been commissioned for a new stage of work at New Covent Garden Market in London’s Nine Elms, a scheme the practice has been involved with continually since its original masterplan for the market’s future development in 2011, which considered the 23ha site’s many component parts and overall relationship to the surrounding area. The area is currently undergoing a raft of landmark developments, from the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station and the new Northern Line tube network extension to the completion of the American Embassy and numerous Nine Elms residential developments. Floating House in Vancouver, Canada by ARNO MATIS ARCHITECTURE INC

Monday, May 28th, 2018

Article source: ARNO MATIS ARCHITECTURE INC

Floating house captures Vancouver’s “West Coast Fusion”: a contemporary mix of eastern and western influences fused with indoor/outdoor living. This highly innovative private residence designed by Arno Matis breaks new ground with an architectural concrete envelope that uses a completely unique white concrete mix custom developed exclusively for the project. The composition appears to float on a large reflecting pool set within an oriental garden setting. Large expanses of glazing and sliding doors are framed in mahogany and screened with a dynamic architectural wood screen. The interiors flow with cascading floor slabs and dramatic volumes as unnecessary partitions are removed to create interior ‘exhibition’ spaces. The minimalist interior finishing details include stone slab floors, a suspended main stair of steel and hardwood; floating ceilings; and suspended custom fireplace, including a glowing onyx fireplace feature in the Master bedroom.

Mount Herzl Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel by Kimmel Eshkolot Architects

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018

Article source: Kimmel Eshkolot Architects

The Mount Herzl Memorial Hall is a unique place of commemoration. It’s raison d’etre is to be a memorial for all the fallen soldiers of the country, and thus contains all their names.

It is a project of hope for peaceful times.

Set in a calm biblical scenery, but adjacent to the nowadays busy streets of Jerusalem, the space is isolated and quiet. It was excavated in the mountain to form an intimate space for both personal and collective experiences of commemoration. Above the hall, the mountain is reconstructed of curved topographies made of Jerusalem stone. An undulating funnel-shaped formation of bricks opens the excavated hall to the sky. Its irregular vortex shape floods the space with ever- changing natural light.
