Abacus Lofts in Toronto, Canada by Quadrangle Architects Limited

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

Article source: Quadrangle Architects Limited

Abacus Lofts sensitively responds to its diverse context, setting a strong precedent for midrise, mixed-use intensification in the City of Toronto. Located in the Little Portugal neighbourhood, just east of bustling Ossington Avenue on Dundas Street West, the area is dotted with gleaming galleries, boutiques and restaurants that are popular with the city’s young and trendy. Traditional churrasqueiras, bakeries and narrow, red brick homes root the long-standing Portuguese and Brazilian community. The 39-unit, eight-storey Abacus, which replaces a rundown auto services centre on an 8,000-square-foot site, plies both realms thoughtfully and artistically.

TMOLO House in Asturias, Spain by PYO arquitectos

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

Article source: PYO arquitectos

Before its conversion, the farmhouse was untouched for over five decades and needed a complete renovation to be adapted for contemporary needs. There were two construction sites: the main house and a stable. The main house was in a very bad condition, overgrown with vegetation, and numerous repairs had to be made to make it livable. The stone and timber structure of the stable was significantly deteriorated and most of the walls had to be replaced.

Yutaka Kindergarten in Saitama, Japan by SUGAWARADAISUKE

Thursday, October 29th, 2015

Article source: SUGAWARADAISUKE

Yutaka Kindergarten is built on a steady philosophy of play-based education, encouraging children to develop their thinking actively. Space that offer diversity of experiences by stimulating children to explore and develop their thinking was required to practice this education policy. In order to respond to its needs, we traced the word “kindergarten” to its origin – “children’s garden” – and converted the site into gardens for diverse children’s activities. Three approaches were adopted to realize the ‘gardens of learning through play’.
