Article source: Andrew Maynard Architects

An extension to an existing 3 bedroom house in Fitzroy North to provide new living and kitchen space for a growing young family. Many of the design decisions were generated by the tight budget. The form is a simple box- the strongest form an architect can achieve at a bargain basement price.

Hiža-a contemporary interpretation of a traditional zagorje cottage in Kumrovec, Croatia by PROARH

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

Article source: PROARH

The pre-existing traditional Zagorje cottage is situated on the green slopes near Kumrovec  and was structurally and statically in poor condition. It was renovated taking into consideration the characteristics of local heritage and design. The pre-existing house form is kept, while the porch is substituted with a glass cube. To give the cottage southern exposure, the glass form is slided out of the main house volume, simultaneously forming an entrance area.  Interaction of interior and exterior spaces is enabled by opening of the glass walls. The cottage consists of three floors: the basement, ground floor and 1st floor, which is comprised of the essential living spaces- leisure/dining/cooking on groundfloor and sleeping areas on the 1st floor. Groundfloor spaces are then arranged following a traditional system of organisation that creates a common zone with the ‘hearth’ .

Moor Street Residence in Fitzroy, Australia by Andrew Maynard Architects

Article source: Andrew Maynard Architects

How do you create a home in 4.5m? It’s tricky, but a lot of fun.

A family of four had lived in this modest, ageing house for almost eight years. As the children neared their teenage years something had to be done. Abandoning their home and moving elsewhere was not an option as the family was an important part of a thriving community.

Zig Zag in Nieuwveen, Netherlands by Möhn + Bouman Architecten

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: Möhn + Bouman Architecten

This two-storey, 110-meter long residential centre for people with mental disabilities has been designed in close conjunction with an existing tree structure. The resulting zig-zag- shape visually divides the building in smaller, human-scale areas, thus avoiding the perception of an institution. Slowly rising between the trees, a structure of wooden boardwalks accesses the dwellings on the first floor, providing it with a secondary landscape with a unique quality of its own. Every-group dwelling has its own entrance, with integrated sitting benches marking the transition between outside and inside. They are inviting residents to linger and interact with others, as do the retreating zones inside, featuring moos-clad floors and birch trunks.

Article source: [STRANG] Architecture

Built on speculation, this tropical modern residence is located on DiLido Island in Miami Beach.   Open water views of Biscayne Bay informed the design of this six-bedroom home. The Master Suite and Great Room feature walls of glass, while generous overhangs protect the home from the elements.  Natural light floods the entire home as a result of a strategically placed entry courtyard.  The home is currently offered for sale for $13,800,000 through Calibre International Realty.
