Solstice in the Park in Chicago, Illinois by Studio Gang

Sunday, January 5th, 2020

Article source: Studio Gang

Located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, Solstice on the Park is a twenty-six-story residential tower shaped by the angles of the sun and one of the first Studio Gang projects to explore the idea of solar carving for environmental advantages.

The design cuts into the building’s facade in response to the sun and orients surfaces to the optimum 72-degree angle for Chicago’s latitude, maximizing sunlight in winter for passive solar warming and minimizing light and heat gain during summer to reduce air-conditioning usage.

The structure—which includes 250 dwellings and a green roof—also takes advantage of expansive views of Jackson Park to the south and Chicago’s skyline to the north.

The Icon Vienna in Austria by BEHF Architects

Wednesday, December 4th, 2019

Article source: BEHF Architects

BEHF Architects has teamed up with JSWD Architekten to deliver Vienna’s landmark towers THE ICON VIENNA, directly adjacent to Vienna Central Station (Hauptbahnhof).

The complex comprises three high-rise office towers joined by a common plinth. The three buildings appear individual but complement one another and communicate with the neighbouring facilities. The project plays a trailblazing role in the urban fabric and impresses with clarity and accuracy in the orientation of the three high-rise buildings as well as with the articulation of the facades. With its soft shapes, the trio enables an easy flow of visitors between the towers and through the district. Rather than functioning as an individual structure, THE ICON VIENNA opens up to the city and carefully unites the existing buildings in the Belvedere district.

Abode318 in Melbourne, Australia by Elenberg Fraser

Tuesday, November 19th, 2019

Article source: Elenberg Fraser

It’s no secret that everyone covets corner apartments. More light and better views, right? Well, not so with Abode318, our new Melbourne CBD residential apartment tower, where everyone gets a view: it’s democracy in action! Look closely at the wave-like 55 storey form and you will realise that each of the horizontal and vertical waves consist of individual rooms articulated as protrusions, creating the effect of a set of drawers pulled out at random.
These drawers gives residents the chance to give their home an individual identity as well as coveted corner views up and down Russell Street, challenging conceptions of the homogeneity and limitations of apartment living. Each apartment has a presentation to the street, creating a collection of variably expressed individuals.
