METU RESEARCH CENTER in Turkey by Emre Arolat Architects

Thursday, September 11th, 2014

Article source: Emre Arolat Architects

METU – Middle East Technical University is one of the oldest, largest and internationally successful universities in Turkey that is also assertive in scientific, technological and innovative developments. The vision of being “research loaded university” is supported by the investments done to related buildings and strategic supportive programs that have increased the performances in improvements. There are 23 research and application centers in METU by 2011.The project was developed to fulfill the requirements of  the New Research Center that would combine all of these 23 research units at a centrum. The project would increase the interaction between the educational buildings and the technopark just on the other side and at the same time should behave as a social gathering place for the students and the academicians. In this sense it has an atrium like generator space, just in the middle that behaves as the gathering place and that is not climatized creating its own ecology with its semi-closed atmosphere and advanced landscape, serving for the interaction between researchers of various disciplines, instructors, students etc.

New Campus Development of Chu Hai Collegeof Higher Education in Tuen Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong by Rocco Design Architects Limited

Friday, June 20th, 2014

Article source: Rocco Design Architects Limited

The new campus design signifies a highly linked & connected institution. It looks into the compact urban condition of Hong Kong itself for direct inspiration and epitomizes a miniature city, dense and connected. The spatial organization maximizes density by stacking multiple slab blocks of different programs vertically on top of each other over a podium of communal activities, including a number of lecture theatres and a gymnasium.

Ground at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut by Bentel and Bentel Architects

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Article source:  Bentel and Bentel Architects

The new ‘Ground’ cafe, at Yale’s Marcel Breuer-designed Becton School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (‘SEAS’), serves not only to create social cohesion among faculty and students of the engineering school, but also to encourage interaction between and among members of other departments in the University. In the design, the firm engaged the unadorned poured-concrete volume of this former seminar room by layering a palette of walnut planks, perforated aluminum, and cleft bluestone over the walls, floor, and ceiling of the space. The original concrete surfaces are intentionally visible through, and are highlighted by, the veils of the material intervention out of respect for Breuer’s unique exploration in his design of the textural possibilities of a single material.
