Public space regeneration through the “Pedibus” micro-projects in the Oltrarno quarter, Florence
The Oltrarno is a historic district south of the River Arno in Florence with a number of intrinsic characteristics that makes it one of the most problematic areas of the city.
The morphological situation is complex and varied: the historic city center is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site while the pedestrian areas must coexist with congested traffic roads. Moreover the dynamic participation of local citizens in spontaneous committees and the richness of social life (locals, immigrants, tourists) envision the possibility to test here a pioneering project for the regeneration and re-appropriation of public space.

The project finds its place in a band, potentially flooded, between the Seine and the railroad, shores and hillsides. These are occupied by “bourgeoises” mansions, theirs gardens and parks. The riversides shows a mix of homes, modest or opulent – self-built huts, old houses, speculative operations–industrial plants or deposits expiring or abandoned.
The project Childminders Centre (Haus der Tagesmütter) is the first of four buildings which are currently under construction as an implementation of the proposal awarded with the 1st Prize in the International Competition Europan 9 in the city of Selb, Germany. This first project, finished on September 2012, has been also awarded with the Biennial International Prize ‘First Works-2013’ by the German magazine Bauwelt.

The urban development plan for Beauséjour, on the Sainte-Marie town in La Réunion, aims to meet a tremendous challenge. It consists in taking an outstanding 80 ha site of sugar cane fields and then conceiving and creating a town that will be loved by its population and will go through time without hindrance, by integrating it into the environmental setting of the 21st century. (Re-)Discovering the pleasure of living “in town”, on an island, in a period when people prefer to live individually and apart, is not as simple as it may seem.

The surface layer rises like a great cover revealing its core from the street, the valuable archaeological remains which have appeared under it. The building is generated from the urban fabric, as a new public space which covers and protects the history of this city and the representative character of the regional institution founded above this former place.
WXY Architecture + Urban Design was one of three distinguished firms invited by New York City’s Municipal Arts Society to create a vision for the future of the public areas around Grand Central Terminal and the surrounding East Midtown district. With deep experience in civic projects, the firm has proposed opening up more public space to city dwellers and visitors for enjoyment and reflection. The plan would also create inviting thoroughfares devoted to pedestrians and bicycle riders.
At beginning of 2011, Kokaistudios was invited by one of the leading developers in China, OCT Shanghai Land, to lead a thorough restoration and renovation project of a historically significant warehouse on the North side of Suzhou Creek in Shanghai. The warehouse; the early 20th Century Ewo Packing Factory warehouse building; is the first building to open in the new large scale OCT urban re-development project SUHE CREEK designed by Foster+Partners and where the 4th Bvlgari Hotel will be located. The building now serves initially as the Project Showroom, Sales Center and VIP Reception Venue as well as housing the studios for two of China’s most prominent contemporary artists, Yan Peiming and Liu Xiaodong. It will be part of the riverside commercial space where international brands will be located in the future.

Redevelopment of a centrally located site in Göteborg. The commission was to develop the future empty site remaining from the planned demolishing of the old bridge Göta älvbron.
The Proposal aims to link the fragmented urban fabric that is the present state of the site. A new green urban axis connects the waterfront with the city center and existing green urban areas. This new walk and bicycle path aims to secure green public space in a future densification of the central site.
Headed by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah, the aim of the Msheireb project is to create a modern Qatari homeland that is rooted in traditions and to renew a piece of city where global cultures meet but not melt. The scope of the project is to rejuvenate a 31 hectare site within the heart of the city.

Twentieth century Dutch architecture was dominated by the challenge of the era: large scale housing. Berlage, Granpre Molière, Oud and van Eesteren. Every decade its own urbanism and architecture. WWII did not change this pattern. Pendrecht, Bijlmer, Tanthof, Prinsenland. Looking back at these hundred years one might think the experiment is the basis of both architecture and urbanism. It is not.
