Re-qualification and Redevelopment of the Beach and Seafront of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos in Portugal by atelier RUA

Ideas Competition for the Re-qualification and Redevelopment of the Beach and Seafront of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos – 2nd Prize

The 400 m walk to reach the waterfront of the “claridade” beach in Figueira da Foz, isolates the city and its inhabitants from the sea. The prominent shape of the coastline in Buarcos is the starting point of a linear gesture that stretches along the whole waterfront of Figueira da Foz, sewing together the existing promenade and the beach front, and ending at the tip of the northern pier.

Centro de Acçao Social por Música in São Paulo, Brazil by Urban-Think Tank

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Article source: Urban-Think Tank

Despite its central urban location, the marginalized area of Grotão within Paraisópolis is effectively separated from the formal city. Within this isolated zone, increased erosion and dangerous mudslides have designated the site as one of many high-risk zones in the city – a primarily inaccessible void in the otherwise dense urban fabric.

Töölönlahden Block 2018 in Helsinki, Finland by ALA Architects

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Article source: ALA Architects

“FINIS”

The charm of Töölönlahti street blocks is in its completing the immediate urban fabric without stealing all the attention. This urban row also shelters the park from discomfort and noise of nearby railroads, and stands as a principle spine to support existing buildings and future public developments. Block 2018 culminates the row, subsequently characterising the entire block.

Biodiversity and the Creation of Mobile Natural Growth by Lijbers Architects

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Article source: Lijbers Architects

Context – Problem Definition
One way to look at the decline of natural biodiversity is from the perspective of complex human dynamics –i.e. the organized but fundamentally unpredictable behavior of human systems – and its consequences for the natural environment. We humans tend to expand, move, and reallocate ground at speeds unparalleled within the natural world. Our persistent and unpredictable need for space, land, and raw materials causes the original natural environment to diminish, along with its ecosystem of plants and animals. The highly dynamic reallocation and changing of the earth’s habitat by human action falls short in providing vulnerable species of plants and animals with sufficient time to recover. The continuous cycle of removing and reallocating natural space can, in the best case, maintain a certain amount of the “natural environment”, yet it can never maintain the same level of biodiversity that was originally present.

Kokkola pedestrian centre in Finland by ALA

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Article source: ALA

Kokkola wanted their currently car-inhabited center area to become obviously pedestrian (with as little effort as possible). We decided to start by placing a tree in the middle of the street. With time, while more trees are planted, the street (sufficient width dimension courtesy of Finnish traffic engineering standard) would turn more into a park, or a square.

HYDRAMAX: Port Machines in San Francisco, California by Future Cities Lab

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Article source: Future Cities Lab

Exhibited at SFMOMA from 31 March to 29 July, 2012

Future Cities Lab’s HYDRAMAX Port Machines project proposes a radical rethinking of San Francisco’s urban waterfront post sea-level rise. The proposal renders the existing hard edges of the waterfront as new “soft systems” that would include aquatic parks, community gardens, wildlife refuges and aquaponic farms. A synthetic architecture is introduced that blurs the distinction between building, landscape, infrastructure and machine. Using thousands of sensors and motorized components, the massive urban scale robotic structure harvests rainwater and fog, while modulating air flow, solar exposure and intelligent building systems.

Building Tirana’s GREEN Future: Tirana Northern Boulevard and River Project in Albania by Cino Zucchi Architetti

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Article source: Cino Zucchi Architetti

The center of Tirana is marked by a clear urban layout, but its recent growth filled up a large area around it without any order, structure, adequate services or meaningful public spaces.

In our proposal, the voids rather than the buildings become the catalysts of new urban regeneration, attracting public and private functions around a sequence of green spaces of high environmental quality. The extension of the boulevard into a lively green promenade progressively opens up to the beautiful landscape of the hills across the Tirana river.

Flussbad in Berlin, Germany by realities:united

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Article source: realities:united

The goal of the Flussbad project is the permanent transformation of a 1.5-km stretch of river in Berlin’s historic center that has gone unused for more than 100 years.

The lower section of the course of the river, currently channeled as a canal, will be made into a space accessible to the public via two broad shoreline stairways at the Lustgarten and the Schlossplatz. The design alterations in this sensitive city-planning area, part of which belongs to the “Museum Island”, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site, are restricted to a minimum.

Carros in Nice, France by N+B Architects

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Article source: N+B Architects

Parking’s presence of the urban space in front of the Forum Jacques Prevert in Carros, allows a better management of the car parks which blocked the environment of this part of the city center of Carros. We wished to set up the architectural and urban elements which give viability to this project of evacuation of the traffic, especially positioning the parking lot as entity registered in the landscape.
