Taichung Green Corridor in Taiwan by mecanoo architecten

Thursday, March 14th, 2019

Article source: mecanoo architecten

The 1.7km long former railway line crossing downtown Taichung was an important catalyst for the development of the old city. The railway’s historical value plays an important role in the revitalisation of the urban realm on which it sits.

Sustainable life, sustainable history & culture

Although in the past, the rail line was a mean of connection, the disused railway acts more as a divider due to its challenging location on the dyke, which impedes the circulation from one side of the tracks to the other.

Vistula Waterfront Competition in Warsaw opens the city to the river by ELEMENT

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019

Article source: ELEMENT

Leading idea of Vistula Waterfront design was to refer to existing urban site by providing a composition opening towards the Vistula River and reinforcing the links with Khal’s Square. Architects wanted to create specific character of particular parts of the boulevard by alternating different kinds of temporary urban space and park areas. The boulevards were designed concerning variable water levels in the Vistula River. In result the bank changes its shape with the height of the water in the river.

Young City Gdansk in Poland by MVRDV

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019

Article source: MVRDV

Młode Miasto or Young City of Gdansk has always had a significant role in the development of the City. Since its first official mentioning in the historical chronicles of 1380, the site has been recognized as a new and attractive settlement area for future generations and with such a rich past, the identity of the new neighbourhood should be built around this heritage.

Like a palimpsest, traces of the different periods of the shipyard can be found overlaid throughout the site. Thess traces form a starting point for the definition and design of the public realm, with each main public space referring to a specific period of history and reimagined for future programs offering a mixed and people-centred new district. Streets and plazas will turn into an urban timeline with a “memory walk” resurfaced and revived for the new community and future generations of Gdansk. The main advantage of this part of the city has always been its location. Not only because of its direct connection to the Main City, but also, due to the nearby Vistula river which has been the main source of water and transport.

Comfort Town in Kiev, Ukraine by ARCHIMATIKA

Wednesday, January 16th, 2019

Article source: ARCHIMATIKA

The first residential complex in Ukraine based on the block development principle, instead of customary Soviet micro-district type.

Different number of stories of adjacent buildings (ranging from 2 to 16 floors) forms a picturesque image of every street. A restored park with perennial trees, sculptures and a fountain, block development, pedestrian courtyards where you can play with children – all that makes this residential neighborhood intimate and cozy. It has set a new level of quality in a residential building due to the block development. Thus, the industrial territory turned into a good living environment and the status of the district as a whole increased. Residents have received a complex, comfortable environment with green pedestrian courtyards. Full infrastructural service includes fitness clubs, stores, kindergartens and schools.

Comfort Town is one of the most successful residential property projects in Ukraine. Sales indicators peaked at over 200 apartments per month.

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

The Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre harnessed the energy of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to create a project with a lasting legacy that has enhanced and also regenerated its setting – acting as both an anchor and a catalyst for future investment in Nanjing’s Hexi New Town.

Comprised of two hotel towers that include the new Jumeirah Nanjing, a cultural centre with conference facilities, an urban plaza, offices and mixed-use areas, the development initially provided accommodation for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Now in its legacy stage, the centre has fostered investment in Hexi New Town on multiple levels; integrating additional infrastructure with new functions that include the hotels and a venue for Jiangsu Province’s annual conferences.
