This project emerges from two individual, singular points which propose a very well defined field of work from the outset:
On the one hand, this is a building for a previously established art collection from the 1950s-1970s, including the collection donated to the city by Spanish artist Eduardo Sempere. This collection consists of works by modern artists: Calder, Vasarely, Chillida, Julio González and Sempere himself.
The shape of the main street and the square in “Pilar de la Horadada“ were very irregular, with a lot of sharecropping walls, patched parking and twisted lines of trees. We thought about a walk besides the sea, a pedestrian path between sand, palms and coconuts.
The scattered and trans-European city that the mountainous coast of Alicante has become, houses a heterogeneous population that is drawn to the sun, the sea, the temperate climate, the convenient public services and the leafy greenery. The promise of relaxing and hedonistic experiences captivates both seasonal tourists and long-term residents who see their expectations fulfilled amongst jasmine and bougainvilleas. The project draws from this context and is designed to meet the demands of multiple families in the summertime and as a haven for retirees the rest of the year.
Given the nature of today’s work processes, how can the workplace better support the employee and the company’s image? How can the workplace support all of the different activities involved with knowledge work – things like collaboration, creativity, innovation, deep thinking and mentorship? These are the questions this project tries to answer.
The owners’ urban calling is behind site’s location. A quiet street in Elche’s San Jose area with almost no traffic.
The plot dimensions are 7m x 10.5m, in a street that measures 4m wide.
A tripartite collaboration: Maite (owner), Angel and Javier (project authors, one is also an owner). The first decision is to build “the sideways look”: the facade is drilled with the minimum space, necessary to meet the building legislation.
The project responds to the surrounding landscape defined by two different topographies: one horizontal plane oriolana garden, where it supports the building, and on the other the ubiquitous mountain in the north facing the delimitation. The volume of the building reflects this duality fragmenting the different volumes that comprise this mechanism to recognize the profile of the mountains to the opening. The building consists of two classrooms of children, four primary classrooms, a gym and a dining room for one hundred students in two shifts, plus all associated teaching spaces.
