Villa Cascade in Almere, Netherlands: Architecture creates dialogue between nature and urban feeling For Villa Cascade, CROSS Architecture has developed a terraced building structure with an inner courtyard that opens onto the adjoining waters. A total of 29 apartments of various sizes have been built on five floors. The modern city villa is located in Almere Poort in the Netherlands.

As the newest district of Almere, Poort differs from its neighbouring districts: Not only single-family houses are planned, but also a wide variety of high-density multi-family houses will dominate the picture in the future. Villa Cascade is located at the interface of green surroundings and adjacent water routes. An attractive location, not only because of its park character, but also because of its immediate proximity to Amsterdam and the unique view of the metropolis skyline.

House with 11 views in Almere, The Netherlands by Marc Koehler Architects

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

Article source: Marc Koehler Architects

Five small artificial islands mark the border between the suburban expansion of Almere Stad -the new neighborhood ‘Noorderplassen West’- and the nature area ‘Noorderplassen’. House with 11 views is located on one of these islands. Although the distinction between culture and nature is palpable, both are part of the same polder landscape. A landscape that had its origin on the design table and was created out of nothing.

Project X in Almere, The Netherlands by René van Zuuk Architekten bv

Friday, March 24th, 2017

Article source: René van Zuuk Architekten bv

Behind the somewhat mysterious name ‘Project X’, hides the design of René van Zuuk and his family’s own residence. The villa with a small office space is located next to the architect’s former residence Psyche, in Almere’s The Fantasy district, an area for experimental housing. His old house now serves as the architects office since 2004, it occurred that the two plots could be consolidated into one garden. The garden area is optimized by leaving only the width of a parking space between Project X and its neighbouring house.

Villa Al in Almere, The Netherlands by WHIM Architecture

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Article source: WHIM Architecture

Villa Al is a green villa in a green environment. This proposal emphasises the existing qualities and character of the location.
A meandering river through a green environment is translated into a meandering route through a green pavilion.

In a natural context also the electricity and heating are found in natural resources. A heat pump installation allows for heating from the soil. Electricity is captured by solar panels and from the water motion in the river.

De Nieuwe Bibliotheek Almere in The Netherlands by Concrete Architectural Associates

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Article source: Concrete Architectural Associates

Design Story: The challenge was to design all public spaces within the new public library in Almere. The building was designed by Meyer en van Schooten Architects. The overall design scope consisted of 5000m1 linear meters of bookshelves and accompanying facilities: counters, internet areas, a read café, study areas and a multimedia department. At the request of the client we contributed to the development of the shop-concept: a commercial approach, instead of a standard library positioning and structure, where books are presented to a ‘customer’ and where the library itself becomes a place to stay; more like a modern retail concept.

Petting farm in Den Uyl Park, Netherlands by 70F architecture

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Most city parts of Almere, a city with almost 190.000 inhabitants, have a petting farm. In the ‘den Uyl’ park there used to be one, but it burned down in the early 80’s, leaving only its concrete foundation. Early 2005 we were commissioned by the municipality of Almere to design a new petting farm on the exact location and the remaining foundation. The building was finally built using almost only sponsored money, and finished late 2008.

Sheepstable in Almere, the Netherlands by 70F Architecture

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Article source: 70F Architecture

The city of Almere has a sheep population of about 80 sheep. The sheep are mobilized to keep the powerful weed “acanthus” or “bears-breech” that grows in the “vroege vogel” – forest and “kromsloot” – park in Almere under control. To centralize and house this population, a sheep stable was needed. The stable is designed with an a-symmetrical homogeneous cross-section. The part of the building where the sheep reside is relatively low; the high part is situated above the (public) pathway and the hay storage section, making it possible to store a maximum amount of hay. This shape also creates a natural flow for the air inside the building, which is refreshed by two slits at the foot of each long side of the building.
