Amsterdam Children’s Playschool in Netherlands by Tiago do Vale Architects

Thursday, January 5th, 2017

Article source: Tiago do Vale Architects

Amsterdam is, today, a major european city consolidated on an important architectural tradition. A strong sense of identity and belonging is very characteristic of both the city and the country -defined by its permanent fight between the sea and the territory conquered to it- and that reflects on a generalized concern over the quality of public spaces and their collective enjoyment.

Hence, the Amsterdam Children’s Playschool starting point was the idea of having a children daycare center as a device to qualify an abandoned public space.

Designed over an abandoned dock, this proposal combines classrooms with exterior patios, with different uses and diverse degrees of privacy (some more public functioning as plazas, others semi-private with flexible uses, others totally private for the exclusive use of the daycare center).

Nieuwdok NDSM in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Moke Architecten

Thursday, December 8th, 2016

Article source: Moke Architecten

The site of NDSM Nieuwdok site is a former ship dock area at the waterfront of Amsterdam Noord in the Netherlands. The area is currently largely derelict and used by early adapters, like Greenpeace, Red Bull and MTV. The remaining monumental industrial buildings allocate small creative businesses and workshops, while new bars and hip festivals indicate the potential attraction of the area. They are signs of what is about to happen, as in the coming years the area will be transformed into a diverse urban area, with housing, office space, hotels and the like, all with a staggering density. Surrounded by the IJ River and some remaining docks, the water has a strong impact on the site and provides beautiful views.

Oamsterdam in Netherlands by HofmanDujardin

Tuesday, November 29th, 2016

Article source: HofmanDujardin

Dutch architectural firm, HofmanDujardin, introduces a revolutionary, life-enhancing urban strategy for the city of Amsterdam. “We live in Amsterdam and we love Amsterdam. It is a fabulous city, and we want to make it more fabulous,” says Michiel Hofman. Oamsterdam offers an innovative plan to connect the northern district to the rest of the city. Mirroring the form of the exiting half-circle of the north, we will create a circular path through the city, thus restoring Amsterdam’s historic connection to the water and opening up the Ij waterfront. The inner ring will be a vital new connection uniting areas of the city, bringing space and air to the historic, crowded centre.

The 4th Gymnasium in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Paul de Ruiter Architects

Tuesday, November 1st, 2016

Article source: Paul de Ruiter Architects

In the first energy-neutral district of Amsterdam, the Houthavens, we designed the 4th Gymnasium. An energy-neutral secondary school that accommodates about 800 students. The school functions as the entrance of the new district. The Houthavens had an industrial role for years and will transform into a vibrant district with several islands in the upcoming years. A great variety of buildings and residents will take their place here. The 4th Gymnasium serves as a herald for the further developments of this area.

Housing Borneo island in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Urban design In the Eastern Harbor Area, next to the KNSM and Java island lie Borneo and Sporenburg islands. West 8 (Adriaan Geuze) has created a very inspiring urban plan. The question for West 8 was how to create a water-city along the kilometers of 19th century harbor cays. West 8 did not solve this problem by attempting to subdue the scale with huge blocks, such as Jo Coenen has done on the KNSM island, nor by trying to reduce the scale by creating cross-canals, such as Sjoerd Soeters, but by repetition of a small scale.
