Thanks to its completely prefabricated white concrete facade with undulating balconies, Lofts by the Amstel is undoubtedly an eye-catcher by the waterside in Amstelkwartier, Amsterdam. Each of the building’s six private owners designed their ideal apartment, which occupies one entire floor. This collective of owners and the team – Studioninedots/ OntwerpJeWoning/ Vink Bouw – are incredibly proud of the result.
FabCity pavilion designed around a campfire to welcome and encourage storytellers.
This spring, the city of Amsterdam is host to the European Union. On the Marineterrein politicians discuss and decide on Europe’s future, under bright artificial light, with cameras and microphones registering each and every word.
In Banne Buiksloot in the north of Amsterdam the general building fabric consists of high apartment blocks. In contrast the public buildings do the opposite. They form a network of low buildings that seek a strong connection to the public domain. The new 2 storey primary school, designed by the architect Gianni Cito of the Amsterdam office Moke Architecten, does the same. The school stands out due to its crenelated shed roof and the tribune stairway that connects the school with the playground. The playful round windows and the red scaly façade give the building an autonomous expression that fits its public role.
KAAN Architecten has won the commission to design the New Amsterdam Courthouse. The building will be located at the intersection of the Zuidas and Parnassusweg, where the present judicial complex will be demolished. The new building is to be completed in 2020. In the meantime, the law courts will be temporarily housed elsewhere in the neighbourhood. With a staff of 1.000, including 200 judges and 800 professionals, as well as many daily visitors and the processing of 150.000 cases a year, the Courthouse of Amsterdam is the largest in the Netherlands.

This charming loft, full of life and standing on one of the famous Dutch canals, has recently been refurbished by Houtwerk BV – a member of the HI‑MACS® Quality Club – who based their work on a design by architecture firm Witteveen Architecten. The excellent result is the product of the creative relationship between the new modern elements and the original typical characteristics of the interior.

The Marine Base in Amsterdam has been a restricted military area for centuries, located in the heart of the city. In January 2015, the compound has begun a gradual transition towards a more public program. The departure of the designated marine units will be completed in 2018. Building 27E, a former education facility, is the first building on the site to be renovated for a public program. It had recently been dismantled and stripped down to a bare concrete skeleton. In June 2014 The Central Government Real Estate Agency commissioned bureau SLA to present a design accommodating new uses within the building. To host the Dutch Presidency of the European Union, taking place during the first half of 2016, the building was completed in January 2016.
Yesterday the glass doors of Crystal Houses opened, a visionary exploration into reimagining the possible uses of glass in construction. The entirely transparent façade of a high-end flagship store on Amsterdam’s upmarket shopping street, PC Hooftstraat, uses glass bricks, glass windows frames and glass architraves in a way to evoke the vernacular of the area with the goal to maintain the character of the site. The 620 m2 of retail and 220 m2 of housing, were designed for investor Warenar. The design unites the ambition of Amsterdam to have large distinctive flagship stores without compromising the historical ensemble. The project, conceptualised by MVRDV, was developed and constructed as part of a multi-team collaboration including Gietermans & Van Dijk Architects, Delft University of Technology, Brouwer & Kok engineers, ABT consulting engineers, Poesia (brand of Vetreria Resanese) glass manufacturers from Italy and contractor Wessels Zeist.
On Kop Zuidas in the south of Amsterdam the scaffolding of project Square has been dismantled, revealing the nicely detailed masonry of the outer façade. Square is a compact residential building with 111 mid-market rental apartments. With its on-site restaurant and young inhabitants, Square will serve as a lively center-spot for this new neighborhood between the Rivierenbuurt, RAI and Amstelpark. A linden tree has recently been planted in the inner courtyard, soon to be a showpiece of 8 metres tall. The gate will be enriched with an art piece, a filigree fence with bronze linden branches. At the beginning of May, the new inhabitants will move into their new homes.
