AKBANK is the new Netherlands Headquarters of the AKBANK in the Rembrandt Tower in Amsterdam.
The key element for the design is the concrete core of the building. The architects focused on creating a sculptural furniture element around the core, transforming it into the “core object”. The design targets to activate the spaces around the core by using a generic order. The “windmills”, a conception based on generic design, generate endless rotations around the core. The windmills are used on two levels, an upper and a lower level on which they rotate in opposite directions. The dimension of time, i.e. in this case the motion of the user causes with each new perspective unique impressions of space. The space becomes actual space. The repetition of the concept on all of the four walls and the short distances cause the intuitive will to explore the sculpture.
A formerly garage space in Amsterdam’s area de Pijp, turned into a spacious house naturally lit by large roof lights. The interior with a generous 230m2 on one floor level is finished in a simple material palette. The repetition of rectangular rough oak wooden surfaces is in great contrast with the stark white walls, black surfaces and grey cast flooring.

The ‘Little Reed Island / Kleine Rieteiland’ on IJburg is surrounded by water that forms the border to the southern Diemerpark. The central street of the island is flanked on both sides by a continuous row of built homes developed in private ownership. Within well-defined urban conditions each house has its own architecture. The design for the house on lot 75 is created within close collaboration between the client and the architect.

Since they have not been brought up in Amsterdam where they have a lot of gloomy weather, their request was to have maximum sunlight in the house. And also they want to have a space where they can feel each other.

The project “Kinderstad” (Dutch for “children’s city”) emanated from the Young Architects Competition of the Dutch National Board of Architects (BNA) together with the Ronald McDonald Children’s Foundation (Kinderfonds) in 2003. SPONGE ARCHITECTS & Rupali-Gupta in cooperation with IOU ARCHITECTURE (Björn van Rheenen, Rupali Gupta and Roland Pouw) won the first prize and received at the same time the appointment to realize the winning design for both the exterior and interior work including the management of the project. “Kinderstad” is the first project among the projects presented to the BNA Young Architects Competition that has actually been realized and implemented. The similarity between the result and the competition design is striking. During the process of the implementation almost all ideas and designs have been adopted.

The Corten De Geer law firm is expanding, and moved to a new and bigger floor in the same building: the office v2.0 (re)new!. Emma was asked to research, define and execute the law firms need for anew space. Marten de Jong of Emma Explore defined the design commission through in depth conversations with the firms partners, came up with the spatial concept and design, and supervised the execution. The result is unlike any other lawyers office: transparent, sustainable and both contemporary and monumental at the same time.
